For perspective, a comprehensive history of WCW On a Pole Matches:

October 1992: Coal Miner's Glove on a Pole
July 1996: Sock Full of Silver Dollars on a Pole
March 1998: Baseball Bat on a Pole
January 1999: Key for a Steel Cage Containing Torrie Wilson on a Pole
[VINCE RUSSO COMES IN]
November 1999: Pinata on a Pole
November 1999: Two Flags on a Pole
December 1999: Crowbar on a Pole
January 2000: Champagne Bottle on a Pole
[VINCE RUSSO IS SENT HOME]
February 2000: Leather Jacket on a Pole
March 2000: Hardcore Title on a Pole
[VINCE RUSSO RETURNS!]
July 2000: Viagra on a Pole
August 2000: Pipe on a Pole
August 2000: Judy Bagwell on a Pole
September 2000: Stickball Bat on a Pole
October 2000: WCW, Coal Miner's Glove, Blow Up Doll, and Scott Hall Photo on Poles
[VINCE RUSSO IS SENT HOME AGAIN]
December 2000: Chair on a Pole

There was clearly an uptick in pole matches in late period WCW, but Vince Russo is still responsible for half of all _____ on a Pole matches in WCW history despite only having the book for less than a year combined.

i have no recollection of this match, but based on my knowledge of Torrie's booking, they probably made her pole dance on the pole. and you won by, like, pulling off her top.

EDIT: if it was like judy bagwell, she was on a forklift but 'on a pole' is way funnier. Also somehow my theory about Torrie seems less likely for Judy...

Also he's dry snitching about the fact that he booked 700+ matches when he had the book for such a short amount of time, and also ignoring the plethora of Pole matches he booked in TNA, including the inaugural "Feast or My Fired" match in 2007. Though I had forgotten how early the "actually this lovely idea wasn't even Vince Russo's idea, he didn't write it, joke's on you!" denials started.

Yep, anybody with a modicum of self-awareness would take it as a learning experience and become a better booker as a result.

And then there's Vince Russo....

5. Tank Abbott (David Abbott) beat Big Al (?) in a skins match, which was a leather UFC jacket on a pole in 4:34. Tank should never go 1:34 at this stage. This was a combination of really stiff blows and bad language. Abbott sold real big for his buddy. They were, by pro wrestling standards, totally potatoing each other with blows. The crowd had no idea how to take this, but it wasn't a positive confusion. Abbott made a comeback and put Al on his shoulders like for a Samoan drop, then climbed the ropes, with Al's life being in grave jeopardy by the shakiness of Abbott while climbing. Right before Abbott got to the top, he dropped Al all the way to the floor, which was actually the planned spot. Al lived. Tank went to the floor and punched Al, then got the jacket for the win. After the match, Abbott pulled out a switchblade and put it to Al's throat and made some remarks about he could kill him right there. The director pulled away from the shot apparently in a major panic. Tony Schiavone in the thinking on his feet award tried to suggest Abbott had scissors and not a switchblade and was looking to cut Al's hair, of which he didn't have any. Okay, maybe it wasn't that great thinking on his feet. Everyone was asking questions about that one after. 1/4*

It's so dumb. If you want a match based around a weapon, do a weapon match. If you want a match based around reaching an objective that's out of reach, do a ladder match.

Matches based around pretending you can't reach something that's clearly in arm's reach are stupid, there's a reason the last time WWE tried to do a pole match and a flag match, they were both boring and terrible. The fact that he booked one and then instead of going "whoa, that sucked, okay, live and learn.", he booked six more just confirms he doesn't know poo poo about putting on entertainment.

Russo's fanbase are people that think they should be celebrated for cussing at their mom. Its a lot of people that have fond memories for an era of WWF/ECW wrestling that doesn't hold up but they haven't gone back and watched it in 20+ years so why let facts get in the way. I remember being like "oh yeah Attitude Era the best" and going back to the tapes and wondering how the gently caress this kept me glued to the TV.

Dakota was never really seen on the same level as Kairi, Io, etc. Honestly if I had to place her on a tier list, she would be a Tier 2 or 3 babyface. Either way, her injury sucks and I hope she recovers quickly!

And Bianca is still very clearly a heel after last night's promo. She's not terrible, but also not the correct person to take the title from Shayna.

Well yeah, but I think she's in a not so great spot either, and needs a lot of character development. She hasn't been on TV in some time. Last time we saw her, she was more of a tweener. But also still she was still just seen as Mrs. Gargano by a lot of people. Not Candice LaRae.

Candice has a kind of a bad rep at the Performance Center for slacking or being complacent.

I am the last person to bad mouth her trust me.

Personally, think Candice and her style is pretty hard coded. NXT should have known what they were signing in ring wise when they signed her. You might think this is a bit of an out there crazy take and that's fine. But it would be like signing a 25 year younger version of Ricky Morton and expecting Ricky to change. She has her (primarily intergender based) playbook - that she practically wrote btw and that's largely that. Much like Ricky and tag wrestling.

Oh, I'm referring to her ceiling in NXT. I can't see much room for character development as long as she's this attached to Johnny, character wise. Like I find it hard to believe she'll win a title with her current character of being almost exclusively focused on Johnny. And I think a lot of people were hoping she was signed to be more than just the wife of Johnny Gargano.

In other news, Asuka is bragging about how many PS4 games she has.

I remember an AIW podcast where they talked about Candace being the more regimented trainer in their school so hearing about how she's complacent or slacking off is kinda shocking.

Was this a reputation she got recently or during the first few weeks of being at the PC? Maybe she just thought about her ceiling at NXT and the like and that's given her "give no cares" attitude.
