Hostilities between China and Communist Vietnam started even before the south was completely liberated. The Chinese invaded and occupied a Vietnamese island to take advantage of the South's weak position, and it's one of the only times the ARVN actually fought like a real army because they weren't fighting their own people for once. The Vietnamese Communist Party still honors them as national heroes even though they were comprador thugs.
