No, because my response is simply "I don't give a poo poo and I'm confused that you think I would." A core part of Evangelical belief is that it ultimately comes down to your one on one relationship with God, not the fine details of what you may or may not believe.

I see the Apocrypha, Deuterocanonical texts, etc and shrug. They're completely irrelevant to me.

I agree, but tradition holds no authority over the Bible or my beliefs and has no innate purpose or spiritual value.

In the actual religion thread over in A/T, when I first started posting there years ago as perhaps the first Evangelical (very socially and theologically liberal Evangelical, I hate the right wing), that was one of the hardest ideas to get across to people raised in other religious traditions, that Protestants see all that tradition and theology that's not in the Bible and say that's nice and if it means something to you go nuts, but it has no spiritual meaning in and of itself.

This isn't the right thread to discuss all that.
If what's in the bible is important to you I would have figured that what's in the bible is important to you.

What loving version of the bible, though?

Edit: it ain't like God typed out a perfect book 6,000 years ago in modern English and it's never been changed or altered or had stuff removed or added.

Edit: but, no, this particular translation from this particular time period with these particular books is the one true version because of reasons.

That is, has been, and always will be the question

Assuming that some form of religion is correct, some higher power is out there and it does resemble Christian or Muslim or Judaism or however you want to go with it

Their texts were written by men, interpreted by men, with all of the expected failings that would follow. They have been twisted and changed and ignored as was convenient.

If people actually cared about what the bible really said, the real message of it, the world would be in a much better place. But most don't. They just use it as a tool to tell others that they are right, and they are divinely right at that.

Jesus was a dude who hung out with sex workers and the poor and hated it when people misused his name and image. He raged at the greedy and those who would exploit those worse off than themselves.

Even if you don't think he was the Son of God or whatever, Jesus was a pretty cool guy that maybe some people should actually follow his example on, instead of hiding behind a bunch of other bullshit that they think lets them be hateful and ugly.

Jesus and Buddha would have gotten along pretty well I think. Maybe that's why that one manga exists.

A big part of why Protestants (like myself) don't care about the apocrypha or the deuterocanonical books is because we do not think of them as fundamentally different from books like the gnostic gospels or other ancient holy books that aren't included in our canon. That is, they may be good to read, they may even make good points or be mostly or even fully compatible with my faith, but they are not persuasive to any part of my theology. I have no interest in going over them in any detail anymore than I do Shepherd of Hermas or the Gospel of Truth or the Epistle of Barnabas.

To me, they're interesting historically, and a reading of them may be intellectually worthwhile in that regard, but the only religious use that they have is what information a critical reading can provide to help contextualize the canonical books, show what other kinds of writing were circulating at the time, etc.

I'm having a hard time understanding why people are bagging on the dude who's being chill and talking about his beliefs. It's not like he's trying to convert you or something, and he's pretty clearly stated that if you want to know more, you should check out the thread that's explicitly for talking about this stuff. I mean, I get it that a lot of people don't like religion, especially Christianity these days, but why would you even ask someone about their beliefs if all you're going to do is try to poke holes in it. There was a video in the schadenfreude thread where a guy jumped off a roof, trying to jump into a pool and bashed his head straight into concrete. Between the sound of what was eerily similar to a melon cracking and him immediately not moving again, I assumed (incorrectly) that he had died.

It was the latest in a string of videos posted in the thread where there was it wasn't clear that everyone survived and I was in a particularly foul mood over having watched what I thought was a human's last moments on Earth, so I asked for a thread rule on posting untagged people dying and derailed the thread over it.

Someone got real mad at me for not wanting to see people die with no warning.

also, is this really the entirety of the article? wtf?

quote:

The global honey bee population is in decline. Drought, pesticides, global warming and habitat destruction all share a piece of the blame.

The number of bee colonies per hectare of farmland is an important measurement of crop health. As the number of bees declines year by year, so too does the well-being of fruits and vegetables that the world depends on.

But Leigh-Kathryn Bonner, a 25-year-old coming from generations of beekeepers, has a solution. Since 2015, she’s partnered with major companies to install active beehives in their urban workspaces.
