Buzzfeed insistence on the story is extremely peculiar and suggests that there is some substantial aspect of the story that is not fully known yet. Outside theory is that they knew the govt likely knew some information but attributed it to a different source who they were fairly sure had it to see if they could get it on the record or force a reveal.

But now, even here, I think a lot of people are going to remember it as a snarl, rather than being able to parse out what happened, which was basically "Buzzfeed had a story that might have been wrong on details, but which no one is denying the substance of" One of the reasons for the Russia Investigation thread was to be able to kind of sort out what was well-accepted fact, what was a credible guess, and what was rumor, gossip and speculation. Unfortunately, that is gone for now.
