The eclipse is a great brush, but has a couple of design problems. Maybe common to all Iwatas. I'm not sure, since I only have the one.

It's not a huge problem, but it is very finicky about paint that's a little too thick, and clogs easily. The nozzle cap is in 2 pieces, so counteracting dry-tip means working with the outer cap off, or repeatedly stopping to take it on/off. And the nozzle itself screws in instead of a friction fit, but it's incredibly fragile and easy to break off by a slight overtightening. I'd recommend that you not even remove it unless absolutely necessary.

With those caveats, it's head and shoulders above my 105, but I use the renegade more than anything. It's tough enough to beat up, but can detail enough for most things

The nozzle assembly is a 2-piece thing that's not supposed to be disassembled by the end user, the entire assembly is friction fit just like the ones in a patriot.

Can I get a recommendation on a first-timer airbrush compressor?

My local store has reasonable prices on the Iwata ninja (which doesn’t feel like enough compressor), then they also have the Sparmax TC-501 and the TC-2000. For as much as even CHEAP hobby air compressors cost I don’t wanna grab the wrong stuff.

I’ve seen recommends for the Airmax Point Zero compressor on Amazon which costs just south of $100. Any reason to go for more compressor than that? What are some good minimum specs to look for?

If you're gonna buy iwata, get the sprint. The Ninja runs more or less constantly. Sure, it's relatively quiet, but it may still annoy roommates/significant others.

Personal take is either to go cheap and get a Master's for $70 or go big and get a paasch/sparmax for $200. The badger for $190 may be ok (looks like a ninja with a small tank, maybe). If you have the cash, a sparmax will last forever. The Master's will probably overheat and die eventually, but it's a cheap intro

Cool. I really appreciate the info. I think I’ll get a cheap intro tank to start and if I stick with the hobby upgrade to something in the $200 range when it inevitably dies.

Based on a bunch of research and that sale on the Badger website, I think I’ll go with the badger krome for my first airbrush. I want the airbrush for small to mid modeling jobs, and the two needle sizes with the krome will have me mostly covered. Plus at $65 with shipping, it’s about 1/2 the cost of the Iwata airbrush, even with the pretty good Iwata deals at Hobby Lobby.

I don't see anything specifically prohibiting it in the vigilus book or designer's commentary. However, the current rumor is that the GSC codex is going to do away with the brood brothers rule and just include all of the appropriate IG datasheets as GSC faction units instead, basically just to get rid of the weird interaction of people using things like IG specialist detachments or regimental orders (before the index errata) in what is technically a xenos army. So I guess if you somehow build and field a GSC with brood brothers army in the next few weeks you can take a Guard specialist detachment in it.

I could see them giving all of the nominally IG datacards the Brood Brothers keyword, and then making the Guard Officers' orders affect BROOD BROTHERS INFANTRY or BROOD BROTHERS LEMAN RUSS to cut down on confusion. The trade-off, of course, is probably losing some of the more numerous variants of some cards, like Russes or Baneblades.

Not a particularly big loss, I guess.

It's not too complicated. The mini painting thread is probably a better spot. What you need is:

  • Compressor (maybe with adapter for badger brushes)
  • Hose (braided is nice, but up to you)
  • Regulator with water trap
  • Brush
  • Airbrush cleaner (fluid)
  • Airbrush cleaning jar
Nice to haves:

  • Holder for the brush
  • Flow improver
  • Thinner/reducer
  • Maybe retarder
  • Quick connects once you have more than one
  • Ultrasonic cleaner
  • mixing pots/bottles
  • Airbrush cleaning kit (brushes and toothpicks or a needle
Basic gist is to hook up the brush and set the regulator to 20 (to start with). Smaller needles want less pressure. Bigger want more. You really need to experiment a little.

Start with a 1:1 mix of paint and some thinner (reducer, airbrush medium, distilled water, Windex). Reducer recommended. This isn't a fixed ratio. Larger needles will deal with thicker paint. Smaller won't. And mixing ratios vary by paint manufacturer and how much pigment is in it. Spray on cardboard or terrain. If it spiderwebs (paint too thin, and air pressure pushes it around like blowing on a drop of water), reduce pressure or add more paint. If it sputters, do the reverse.

You can mix in the cup, but it's easier to start with a bottle. If you do mix in the cup, add thinner first. You can backflow by pinching the needle to bubble back in the cup to mix, but this can also lead to paint getting into parts of the brush you don't want it to. Proceed with caution until you're more experienced

A dual action brush is, basically, "push down to let air out, pull back to increase paint flow". You can usually set a stop on the needle so you don't spray too thickly until you're comfortable with control.

No matter how perfect everything is, you will eventually start to see it sputter when paint dries on the tip. Take a wet paper towel and wipe off the tip of the needle, and you'll be good again. Flow improver and retarder both help this, but make controlling the paint harder. Blowing air once you let the trigger forward also helps a little. Don't do this over a model. A little oil on the tip of the needle (literally a small drop) helps more. It's best to do this when you re-insert it after stripping, or even a tiny bit in the cup. It doesn't take a lot.

When you're done with a color, wipe out the cup with a paper towel (and dump it back into a pot if there's a lot left so you don't waste it), then add a few drops of cleaner and run it through while you actuate the needle. Then do it with distilled water. Spray until dry.

If it gets really gummed up with too thick paint/dried paint/bad backflow/whatever, take it apart and rinse. Then simple green, in an ultrasonic cleaner if you have one. Take a toothpick or cleaning kit and get the little bits of paint out.

Do not be too aggressive and mushroom the nozzle. Only clean parts where paint should go

Anything beyond this just requires practice. There are lots of great videos on YouTube, but I can't recommend any specifically. Others probably can/will

This is how it currently works. You can't take named characters and brood brothers units replace the <REGIMENT> keyword on their datasheet with BROOD BROTHERS. Voice of Command and Tank Orders by officers are usable, just not the regimental orders or doctrines. I'm assuming that getting rid of brood brothers will lead to some datasheet consolidation so you don't have things like Cult Russes and Brood Brother Russes with different keywords and wargear options. And there's a fuckton of new GSC models accompanying the codex, along with all the stratagems and whatnot. The expectation is that they're getting rid of brood brothers altogether and just including IG stuff as native GSC units so it all enmeshes with the new units and rules, instead of the current system of essentially running two separate armies.

This is the compressor I always recommend, $110 for a good compressor with all the bits and a cheap starter airbrush. You can buy the compressor alone for $10 cheaper if you bring your own airbrush. You'll need to grab some converter parts if you're using a Badger airbrush to connect it to the hose.
