Here’s an stdh that’s always bugged me: John Wayne as an actual cowboy whose cowboy opinions should be taken seriously. He was an actor through and through. Most egregious (although I like the film) is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. John Wayne is the worldwise macho gunslinger and James Stewart is the naïve and idealistic city slicker. In reality John Wayne was playing soldier in films while James Stewart flew combat missions.

Paladinus posted:Reads like a 4chan troll, to be honest. Two gay men adopt a tumblr child and are seen as oppressors by her. It's just too much. Most of these Tumblr posts everyone points to to say "look how awful this tiny minority group is!" are trolls by people trying to make that group look bad. I saw another post on Tumblr once where someone was saying that people shouldn't use gendered pronouns to refer to their pets because they don't know their pet's gender identity. I mean, that seems obviously something a troll would say to make trans activism look ridiculous, but it still had replies that seemed to take it seriously.

The funny thing about it is the fact that, if I remember correctly, Stewart was pretty conservative. But I don't think he was a hardline right-winger like Wayne. I agree with you about Wayne, though. I don't especially care for him, not only because he never really moved out of his 'tough guy' comfort zone, but the macho tough guy stuff leaves me really cold. Burt Lancaster was a tough guy without really putting on the macho too much, generally speaking.

Rome is well known for being exactly the same as it always was. Julius Caesar could definitely find his way around such an unchanging backwater as “Rome.”

What is the gillette ad? Cosmetic products like razors are already aggressively marketed as either “MACHO LUMBERJACK BEARD MAN poo poo FOR MEN!” or “luxurious, expensive and pink” so I’m assuming it must be pretty egregious
