I watched both Fyre docs back to back (Netflix first, Hulu afterwards) and I felt that was the best order to watch them in - Netflix dwells more on Fyre in general, and then you move on to Hulu's take on the guy leading the shitshow. They're both entertaining but flawed docs.

IO on Netflix might be legitimately the most boring movie I have ever watched in my life. And I'm usually a huge fan of slow burns, not to mention a huge sucker for Post Apoc stuff. I don't think it had a single interesting moment in it. It also felt like it was 4 hours long despite being a lean 90 minutes.

For anybody interested, a bunch of Seijun Suzuki movies have been added to Amazon Prime. Right now the following movies are up there: Voice Without a Shadow (1958) The Boy Who Came Back (1958) Smashing the 0-line (1960) Tokyo Knights (1961) The Man with a Shotgun (1961) Teenage Yakuza (1962) Stories of Bastards: Born Under Crossed Stars (1965) Kagero-za (1981) Yumeji (1991) It looks like it's about half the movies from each of Arrow's box sets.

In some ways it's dated, but in other ways it feels more relevant. A lot of the stuff the Strike Team gets up to felt like it was over the top at the time, not so much anymore. In Baltimore we found out that a Strike Team-type unit was doing a lot of that same poo poo for years(including the strong possibility of executing one of their own who was going to testify) and they were just recently exposed. So some of the trappings are definitely dated(the music, the clothes, etc), as a story I think it feels more real than ever before. That pilot was extremely groundbreaking though, that really can't be understated. The idea of having your main character do something so heinous in the opening episode was just not done. The creators/writers of the show I think felt conflicted about it going forward because it was something that they could never take back but at the same time it really gave The Shield a unique stamp right out of the gate that made it a show to watch in people's minds.

Yeah, doing something like that to cement the protagonist of a show as a straight up villain by the end of the first hour was insane. I can’t think of any show that’s done it that hard that fast before or since.

also it had the best member-for-member cast of any cop type show ever imo - specifically walton goggins. he and chiklis pretty much carried that show with their charisma alone despite being arguably the 2 'worst' characters, and i remember an interview with either shawn ryan or kurt sutter where they said they tried really hard to get you to not root for them. also it's hard to mention good performances on that show without mentioning how great anthony anderson was on season 5 (iirc)

Goggins came out of nowhere too. I just watched the Bourne movies and he shows up there as like a techie computer dude with 2 lines, and around the same time he was also in House of 1000 Corpses for like 5 minutes(he gets a great death though). You could probably say that it took him a season or two to really make Shane his own but by the end of the series it's really the Chiklis/Goggins show.

Real language and then how the whole thing played out in that first episode had me hooked for that initial run. Also don't forget about the great guest stars on that show too. They pulled in some major talent.

I am watching Kagero-za right now anywho. These are very different movies from what I normally watch, but that is good! I am wanting to diversify a bit, along with watching some older movies.

Glenn Close, Forest Whitaker, Laura Harring, Franka Potente, Laurie Holden... The guest stars really were top notch on that show. I loved both docs equally, both still had more questions than answers in some cases. I was expecting the fuckjerry people to make themselves look better in their doc and if that was their goal swing and a miss.
