There was a fun pulp story here. They nearly drowned it in eyerolling amounts of cheesy redemptive backstories, off the rails plotting, a second season of the worst cops in the universe, and tons of filler about philosophizin' 'bout the nature of man and morality. What makes it watchable is Jon Bernthal and the actors really punching up the weak material.

I'm so glad we got yet another loving Deborah Ann Woll cameo to make sure Frank knew he had a choice. Honestly the problem with the shows is that many of the side characters come off as convoluted impediments to what has to happen to resolve the A plot, not as characters.

This felt like a good send off to the Netflix Marvel Universe, It had all the highs of a good marvel series, (excellent fight scenes hung off pretty decent actors and an entertaining enough plot.) and all the lows of typical marvel series (Disjointed plots, characters making the stupidest of the stupid mistakes, unbelievable love interests 8 episodes of material stretched to make 13 episodes). I still enjoyed it though despite it's flaws and I hope whatever Disney does it matches up in quality to this.

To clarify, I thought the first three episodes were great, but then it kinda just muddled along. I know it’ll probably get cancelled, but if they did a season 3, they’d really benefit from turning each half into its own story.

Well this is troubling because to me EP4 really dropped off quality wise and was the worst one so far but I was hoping to chalk it up to a slip. I'll stay with it because Bernthal is really good and even if EP4 is the bottom tier it's still worth finishing.

I really, really hope they can return to the form of the first season. The second season wasn't terrible but the mother was a pretty poor antagonist and the lovely doctor NEVER got successfully called out for his utterly reprehensible bullshit.

Not the strongest show, but I enjoyed it. Rather than spoiler text I'll just say the Netflix/Marvel miniverse is full of people that should probably be fired or put on forced leave for long-term psychiatric evaluation instead of failing upward to push the plot.

Anyway, it's a shame that the show runners are finally getting a grasp on a good fun to gritty ratio as Netflix repeatedly drops the axe on top of refusing to have 6-10 episode seasons.

Yeah and every single time she'd get ripped on for being ungrateful and foolish and not understanding on how wonderful and forward thinking the guy was, and then the guy proceeded to prove he had learned nothing and was still completely selfish and obsessed with doing whatever he wanted for his own benefit but never got called out on it and it was supposed to be considered a sad thing that he died.

That plus Trish being rewarded for her horrible and selfish actions really left a bad taste in my mouth. The entire season was full of people who abused or took advantage of Jessica for their own benefit and were rewarded for it, as opposed to the first season which was full of people who continued to try to help her and be there for her in spite of her own self destructive tendencies and self-loathing.

I thought LC season 2 started really strong but the back half started to fall apart and I really disliked the ending, especially now that I know nothing more will ever come of it.

I heard the second season of Iron Fist was better than the first, but the first was bad enough I never had any desire to catch up on it.

Because they're both correct? He gets called out for being in an unhealthy relationship with Alisa -- which is a lot of projection on Jessica's part, it must be said -- but he's not actually Killgrave Mark 2. The relationship in question is codependent and unstable, but it's not abusive.

The mad science I think the show is fairly unambiguous about. It's wrong, and Karl dies for it -- and renounces his choices as foolish as he dies.

Luke Cage S2 is def really good even if the best character literally rides off into the sunset in the back of a van.

I’m finished with the first 3 episodes of Punisher S2 and goddam do I have the craziest love affair with Berenthal. I seriously couldn’t dislike Rachel any harder she’s awful.

I missed his homicidal bear roar.

But yeah the kid hasn't grown on me at all, maybe in the back half she gets better but the poster that said she's just "bratty teenage character" kinda nailed it, she could be victim #2 in a slasher movie without changing her character much.

Ok I just started episode 4 and I for one could not be more disappointed in Billy Russo’s “psychologically damaging” scarring. It’s not an exaggeration to say I’ve got members of my own family who look more hosed up from light acne scars than he does having had his face run through a glass cheese grater.

I’m gonna keep watching but holy gently caress Netflix who ok’d that? The only thing I can think of is maybe the actor or his manager took issue with heavier prosthetics. The level they went with is practically “why even bother?”

EP4 was a huge drop in quality from the first 3. Actually made me take a break.

AV Club addressed this (the scars) and considered that it might be a dig at Billy's narcissim and how even minor, superficial scars are big and ugly in his mind. Except everybody that looks at Billy is a;all "OMG!!! WTF happened to your FACE, dude?!?!"

It had to have been some stupid contract stipulation where actor can't appear too hosed up.

I dunno, I got the impression barely anybody else cared about his face beyond a double-take when they first meet him. it certainly didn't keep Dr. Hottie out of bed with him

Not that I disagree, there were uglier people on screen with him on multiple occasions, so it kinda falls flat that he's supposed to be grotesquely disfigured.

Behold My Magnificence!
At some point late in the season I remember a character mentioning his face positively, something about how good his plastic surgeon must have been. It's still really silly, I expected the make-up artists to have a field day making him look like a frankenstein monster, and it seems clear that the writers thought that too.

I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT!
Bleh, I don't know how I felt about this season. It almost felt like they knew that a possible cancellation was looking and tied everything up and the last image we see was of a Punisher this series would never show, the mass murdering psychopath who seeks out random criminals to kill. Basically Death Wish, and somehow more problematic. Toward the end, they managed to make the girl not do the dumbest thing possible in one instance, which was a nice change, but I really didn't like her overall. I also expected there to be some consequence for Curtis taking the senator to the police, but that just seemed to be all there was to it. The a and b plots being completely unconnected felt odd because they didn't even really seem to advance in parallel, just one would pause while the other developed. It wasn't perfect, but I'm happy with this being the last we see of this version of the Punisher.

The ending was a sour note for me, and not just because the show managed to get me to like both Billy and Krista by the end, mass-murdering madpeople that they were. Ending the show with Frank committed full time to wearing the skull armor and wasting random street criminals, Dinah becoming an appendage of imperial war just like the Ivy League freak from s1, just felt like a waste of the characters' respective arcs. I really enjoyed how they left it at the end of s1, with Frank honestly trying to lead a normal-ish life, and it's so sad to see he actually devolves in method and and personality after sending Amy away, while Dinah's out in the world running however many Franks and Billys, queuing up murder missions in some loosely defined military milieu.

pretty sure they were doing an actual page from a comic with that last shot. It was way too specific. I thought the very end was apt, this entire thing was an origin story and now he's out there being "comics Punisher" cartoonishly murdering everybody with no grey zone. It just didn't make sense with it being so abrupt, its like where you'd expect him to end up if the girl died. But she lived, and the protagonist's kids lived, and they did the tough guy 'respectful nod from a distance'.

Makes me think they changed the ending to be a bit happier than it was originally even if it didnt mesh with the sting as nicely
