I'm surprised we didn't get another round of handwringing when Yasha was making the rounds with his water wars article and Kickstarter. That throw away line about him being a soviet citizen is pretty weak sauce. I guess Mark and Matt just have a knack for knowing which beehive to kick.

I can distinctly remember the last two times this happened. The first was right after The Exile had to flee Russia and they were growing their roots back into the US (and Mark was still doing speed). Mark & Yasha were the first journalists to expose that the Koch Brothers were astroturfing the Tea Party movement, and then all of a sudden there was a big right wing push to discredit them for being sexists and rapists - which was coming from disgusting mutants like Jim Goad of all people. Then it was what, last year or a couple years ago? They did the same thing because Matt Taibbi was getting too popular.

It almost happened a third time because Mark Ames did the funky chicken dance on Andrew Breitbart's grave, but it petered out because I guess the guys who took over after Breitbart died were too busy trying to keep the company together.

I didn't know about right after the Exile got banned, but certainly every time one of them takes on a billionaire (as with Yasha and Ames), or however many people Taibbi pissed off with I Can't Breathe, it starts up again.

I assume we are about to get another one because Yasha went after a couple of maniac billionaires.

They undersold the Dying Earth a little bit, because the most compelling thing about the Cugel stories is that Cugel is a huckster and a conman. It's how he gets conscripted into the wizard's quest, because he's caught trying to steal from the wizard's mansion. The Cugel stories just move between exotic vignette to exotic vignette where the challenge is how Cugel's going to pull one over on the provincialist rubes to get at what he needs.

The other interesting thing is how magic works. It's implied that magic in the Dying Earth is based on some ancient form of technology, but the only knowledge of it which has survived is the user interface. So to use magic you have to memorize the magical phrases and repeat them verbatim - but you can only memorize a few spells at a time, and once you've cast a spell your memory of it is spent until you re-memorize it. That's the tie-in that D&D has to Dying Earth, because wizards in D&D have to memorize spells from a spell book daily and you can only cast spells a limited number of times. This has a big payoff at the end of the first Cugel book, because Cugel ends up getting too full of himself and pulls an Ash.

From Exile to Dirtbag: Edgelord geopolitics and the rise of “National Bolshevism” in the U.S.

quote:

by Alexander Reid Ross

“What’s wrong?” I asked my friend Mikhail* as he stumbled into the dorm room. “You seem shaken up.”

“It’s nothing,” he said, sitting next to me on the bed. “A gang tried to beat me up on my way from the Metro.”

It happened in a central district of Moscow. And then it happened again two weeks later. It was the spring of 2005, the early stages of Russia’s precipitous descent into the far right.

“What? Who?”

“A group of five or six,” he replied breathlessly through a thick Russian accent. “They wore black and had armbands with a hammer and… how do you say it?… A sword.”

After he left, I went to my computer to research the insignia, finding myself in the territory of the so-called “left-wing of fascism,” with terms like “Strasserism,” the “Black Front,” and “National Bolsheviks.” The leading National Bolshevik in Russia was a well-known aesthete and provocateur named Edward “Limonov” Savenko.

I recognized the name Limonov from The eXile, a bi-weekly English-language tabloid that thrived among the expatriates who flocked to Moscow in search of rebellion through sex, drugs, and nihilistic misanthropy.

https://www.takimag.com/article/war_of_the_babies/

quote:

What that means is that immigrants in some situations”€”not Kosovo, not Palestine, but some”€”are the biggest fans of anti-immigrant politicians. I would bet you that a lot of French people from North Africa voted for le Pen: “Yes! Get those dirty Arabs out!” What those people want above all is to shrug off where they came from. I’ve seen it too many times growing up with Mexicans: five years after they come north from Guadalajara they’ve got the big truck with Republican bumper stickers on it. Sure, they have a lot of kids, but that’s what immigrants always do. It’ll stop in the next generation, they’ll turn into nice kid-less selfish yuppies. The only Mexicans I ever met who really got all nostalgic about the old country were second-generation college brats, who’d never been there.

So to assess your situation in terms of the new conquests, you have to decide whether you’re in a Kosovo”€”two tribes hating each other forever, turning out babies as weapons”€”or that Congolese riverboat, where nobody wants it too “authentic” if they can help it. There’s a lot of blurring and overlap between those two models, sure. Take Northern Ireland: a lot of yelling, a lot of noisy tribal hate, but I just don’t think they have it in them to be another Kosovo. Too interested in TV and cars.

That’s what’s funny about the debate right now: the diehards in the U.S. and Europe wish we had the old ruthless will to seal the borders, but the “weakness” of the advanced countries generally works pretty well to turn the immigrants into immigrant-hating locals in a generation or two. The old model, bayonets on the border, isn’t even in the running. Time to face that fact. So the faces will change.

If you can handle these new faces, you’re likely to be surprised to see your “weak” American or European culture win out, slowly, un-gloriously but surely, and you may live long enough to see a whole new crop of pols who look like they just came from Karachi or Kinshasa until you turn the sound on and hear them ranting about how we need to get rid of all these drat immigrants.

Nazbols aren't Strasserist. They also let Limonov publish in theExile regularly. They were basically one of the only outlets Limonov was ever published in English.

Also since I brought this up in the Chapo thread: the hammer & sword is a symbol of the Strasserist Black Front, which hasn't existed since the Night of the Long Knives. Russian Nazbols wore armbands with a grenade on them. Alexander Reid is so unbelievably full of poo poo he can't even get the symbolism right in his own obvious lie.

I don't know if you can effectively determine what's a good look in 2019 based on an article from nearly 18 years ago.

I just got the impression that it was a general lament to the eventual corruption of his punk icons by capitalism and the trappings of the bourgeoisie, compared to the purity of Limonovs straightforward unabashed contrarianism.

That medium article is some horseshoe theory bullshit .

Yeah, it's just surprising to me how bad people are at taking set and setting into account when reading what are effectively articles from a different (pre-911) era, where capitalism had won and history was over as far as everyone was concerned.
