This is a thread for fans of the Radio War Nerd podcast, which most of you probably wouldn't know about unless you were big into Exiled magazine in the 90s or 2000s. Hosted by Mark Ames, and starring poet, professor, and lovable loser John Dolan - they do at least two episodes a month regarding a wide range of war-related topics & current events. Sometimes the focus is on wars of the past, wars of the present, or they will do high profile interviews with experts. Each episode is about 1 1/2 to 3 hours long, which is perfect for those nightmare commutes. https://www.patreon.com/radiowarnerd/posts Episodes are posted regularly through their Patreon, and you will have to actually patronize the War Nerd to gain access. They do throw up half-hour previews of every episode for non-subscribers, and some episodes are free to the public. The last episode posted up for free was an analysis of the Cold War espionage novel The Spike, and how it embodied & influenced the general paranoia behind the assumption that the Soviets were spreading disinformation. I think he's mostly just mellowed out since the days of shooting amphetamines, now that he has a wife & a kid.

John Dolan is the real core of the show, and I guess the content could come off as edgy - but only in the sense that there is very little war analysis in popular media from a left wing perspective. It gets pretty grim a lot, but that's what wars are actually like.

Radio war nerd is fantastic, and John absolutely deserves the money. He's making a decent income from this though, so I can't understand why he is so insistent on being homeless in Europe. I used to read the War Nerd articles on Exiled back in the day, when I was still in school and he was posting as "Gary Brecher" the diet-coke addict IT admin drone from Fresno. I'd occasionally try to read other Exiled articles but it was all drugs and hookers and crap that just didn't speak to 14 year old me the way nerding it up over ethnic cleansing did.

Exiled ruled when they got kicked out of Russia, because the first thing they started writing on was how Obama's America looked a lot like Russia in the 90s. Mark & Yasha were the first guys to break the Koch Brothers astroturfing story, and got no credit for it. It's a shame Taibbi is the only one who became famous.

tbh i think half of the poo poo ames claims to have done in the exile is bs. the exile tried to be Gonzo Hunter THompson Cool in the wastes of post soviet russia, and that includes wild exaggerations about everything. that said ames is def a dick, but these podcasts are pretty good, the whiskey rebellion one is cool

Thanks for posting this thread. I became obsessed with John Dolan a couple of years back when he soberly cut through the ISIS hysteria to show how exaggerated their strength was. He has a way of cutting through BS and challenging accepted norms that I really admire. He's also an excellent writer, both hilarious and poignant - I've read a bunch of his articles a bunch of times they're so good. It's a shame someone that talented has slipped under the radar all his life; I only ever learned of him through a hyperlink in an ISIS-related article. I'm glad his podcast is successful but I do miss his written work. I should join the Patreon so I at least get his newsletters. Do you know if there's a backcatalogue for them?

Just got my hands on a copy of Dolan's book "Poetic Occasion," which while not war related looks like it's going to be a pretty great read. Old anglo poets vying to be top dog of the funeral game sounds like it will be well and good fun. Any ideas when his translation/retelling of the works of Homer is going to get published?

I liked that episode on the Iran-Iraq war. Really sets up how the Iran invasion that both US political parties and the defense industry have been twitching in anticipation to start is going to be kind of a poo poo show.

We could probably defeat Iran in a conventional war, but it would be the most costly war in terms of American casualties since Vietnam. Plus occupying it would be like trying to occupy Afghanistan with an even bigger population than Iraq. It'd be an absolute shitshow, and completely undermine the image of invincibility the US military has built up over decades by picking on weak countries. Mark Ames was also interviewed recently by Abby Martin for The Empire Files. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3Aajppo5Zk He talks about Russia in the 90s, and how the United States helped Yeltsin ruin the country. At the end he warns that Trump is actually in the perfect position to push for conflict with Russia, because why would a Russian puppet do that?
