I think it's irritating when people are going 40-50MPH in the middle lane with no one in front of them, but a lot of people do. Let alone in the left lane. eyebeem posted:I'm in the US. The $45k CAD Ranger I built wasn't even fully loaded, and didn't include a bunch of electronic options that Toyota includes on a base Corolla. It's a loving joke, Ford is a poo poo company, and they're going to sell a fuckton of Rangers

Something Offal posted:Who the hell goes 48 MPH on an interstate? Why is that the EPA test cycle? Maybe because: quote:As an emergency response to the 1973 oil crisis, on November 26, 1973, President Richard Nixon proposed a national 50 mph (80 km/h) speed limit for passenger vehicles and a 55 mph (90 km/h) speed limit for trucks and buses. Nixon partly based this on a belief that cars achieve maximum efficiency between 40 and 50 mph (65 and 80 km/h) and that trucks and buses were most efficient at 55 mph (90 km/h).

I was just muttering on FB that if Chrysler lifted and tweaked a Pacifica and claimed it was the first three row SUV with a sliding door, it would sell like hotcakes. Nobody would even blink at the fact that it was an FWD SUV, as long as the styling suggested the right level of testosterone poisoning.

I wonder if the sliding door mechanism would put too much weight too high up, thereby making the CoG even higher than it would be thanks to the lift?

1337JiveTurkey posted:The US06 supplemental federal test procedure is designed to hit a representative profile of acceleration, deceleration and constant speed driving at a representative profile of speeds for the average highway driver. Anything over 75 mph doesn’t happen enough to justify including it in the test or creating yet another test procedure. Any highway in the southwest the speed limit is 75, so it happens every time I leave the city.

The highways around the city here have a 55mph speed limit but if you aren't doing 70-80 you aren't keeping up with traffic. If everyone decided to do the speed limit, the city would be in instant gridlock that would never let up.

Russian Bear posted:Any highway in the southwest the speed limit is 75, so it happens every time I leave the city. But in practice you also run into traffic on common routes and that slows you down and that tends to happen more often in large cities with lots of people. This document goes into detail about the different methods the EPA used to determine how the average driver drives. The international WLTC (used in the EU and Asia) has a similar document that shows how its test profile was constructed. It's worth pointing out that WLTC 3b also doesn't spend much time at high speeds either and it's a million times better than what it replaced. I should also clarify that US06 does include some higher speed sections but the case for adding more is pretty much anecdotal. The US06 allocates about 24 seconds of its time driving from about 75-80 mph and about a minute or so overall out of 10 minutes driving at over 70 mph. Information on EPA, CARB and the old Japanese and EU driving profiles can be found here.

Wind resistance increases dramatically as a factor of both speed and frontal area so making the test faster would impact the rated and CAFE fuel economy of profitable trucks and large SUVs.

eyebeem posted:Just FYI but the V8 NV3500 has a 375HP V8 with a 7spd. Its cool that it has the engine with BIG NUMBERS, but even with that its still slow as gently caress. Its a big, heavy box that doesn't move no matter what you do to it. Also, it is the worst van because it sacrifices precious cargo space for useless engine space. Personally having driven a variety of vans now, the Transit is my favorite. LWB with the medium roof, V6 EcoBoost is pretty much the perfect van. Enough room to stand comfortably in the back, not too huge a van, and overall a pretty comfortable area up from. Being surrounded by cupholders in nice too. The only issues we ever had with them was the driveshaft recall, and they tend to eat brakes kinda quickly. Otherwise they're pretty nice vans. I guess the Savanna/Express is a good enough van too, but it also hasn't had any significant updates since 1997 and man does it show.
