best codex entry is the one for the krogers in mass effect

"until the invention of gunpowder the #1 cause of death for the krogers was death by wild animal. after, it was death by gunshot"

and its also one of the few with a very serious narrator guy reading it aloud

have you tried anything else, and how does BFV run? might have an extra $15 in the next few days and contemplating trying it

its a recently released Battlefield so there's lots of issues with balance, server bugs, and asinine progression systems

it's also the best Battlefield yet in terms of movement and gunplay mechanics, it generally plays much better than BF1 and is fun as poo poo

Frostbite is pretty well optimized, even on a 64 player server it runs 120-140fps for me which an impressive lack of CPU bottleneck

deffo worth playing and laughing at the ridiculous war porn intro

It's amazing that the Yakuza games are only catching on a decade after release but completely solved all the problems with open world issues and side vs main quests a decade ago and no one noticed to use in other games

So it doesn't solve any of the stuff people were talking about. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing series but it really doesn't do anything special with it's structure compared to other open world games. Yakuza just differentiates itself from the dreck with good writing and quality over quantity.

Like, I don't really enjoy Yakuza as an open world game at all. It's just a vehicle for me to get from quest to quest (or minigame). It's a totally different beast from something like botw where the open world itself is the hook.

I've played pretty much all the open worlds besides Zelda and trust me, running/riding across empty fields or whatever is entirely pointless. Heck, I found botw boring in the short time I tried it out but that's because "exploration for explorations sake" is a stupid concept that dates back to when people bought one game a year and didn't have the internet to find out instantly where they should go rather than wasting a few dozen hours walking around purposelessly

Well done exploration is actually really really good.

botw feels fun as gently caress when you're unlocking the map (like the first 10-12 hours) but then you realize there really isn't much to find, you largely fight the same enemies, and it just becomes a completionist chore. itpapers over the inherent flaws of open world games (they're bad and not good) by having smart terrain design and systems (climbing, elements) that make traversing not entirely uninteresting, at least in the beginning.

open world games have been slowly evolving and develping more macrosystems that take advantage of the fuckhuge map, but no one has really done a good job of making the whole map a system that actively responds to the player in an intelligent way or shapes how they play

like the witcher 3's map really doesn't matter; MGSV does it a little better, but each base is basically an island unto itself, with the gameplay not really interacting with the open world in a real sense

i got bored of GTAV pretty fast after it came out

was the stock system in that completely random? or did blowing up trucks with certain company logos on them do anything to the price?

also it was totally cool how there were two stock exchanges for no reason other than that someone at rockstar was aware of the NYSE and the NASDAQ

Willie Tomg

i played up to around surface tension before and stopped for some reason, but whatever rebalancing/tweaking they've done post-release since then has really made the experience gel better.

they also give you Good Guns much sooner, overall, and a lot more ammo with which to use them so you dont just chill on the first pistol all game until you chill on the SMG all game until you chill on the hivehand all game, occasionally deleting stuff with the shotgun as necessary. they also tweak the finer points of encounters so you rotate stuff around a lot more. bullsquids and vortigaunts are much more threatening, etc. good stuff.

and then they put marines in monster closets godDAMMIT modders why you gotta gently caress that up

the big branch of franklin's missions were pretty much entirely about manipulating the stock market after the first big heist, but aside from that yeah it was mostly just numbers wiggling around within certain boundaries

it's dope, i've only done a few squad capture point matches, but i dig it. runs great!

as for premiere itself, it's a no brainer if there are a decent amount of games in the catalogue you want to play/try. there's like 200 games right now so for $15 you can play the poo poo out of them and just walk away when you're done

it's only an issue if you care about "owning" things i guess, but eh, dehumanize yourself and face to renting literally everything in 2019

it is actually weird to watch open world games grow bigger and bigger but regress from arguably their apogee in gothic 2 and morrowind. rockstar games are especially bad at this, because the open world is essentially an incredibly detailed and pretty but shallow level selector of The Actual Game. Worse, during those missions, as tightly controlled as they are, the emergent behavior or gameplay from the interaction of smaller systems practically disappears.

consequence of not letting the open world breathe and do its thing imo

they think everyone wants 24/7 set pieces all the time but it's just not true at all, especially not if i'm firing up an open world game

stuff like Assassin's Creed: Origins is an interesting evolution in open world stuff because while it's all samey, copy and pasted stuff in terms of actual gameplay, there are the bones of interesting dynamic systems with wildlife, fire, and player abilities but they don't lean into it at all, it just hovers around the margins while you wander around pushing Y to assassinate things

like someone mentioned upthread these games are designed assuming people want technically competent but non challenging gameplay loops that emphasize beautiful, easily traversible areas with no distinctiveness outside of their appearance. like ACO might be the most beautiful game I've ever played, and every area feels painstakingly visually constructed, but the elements of the world the player is capable of engaging with are painfully limited

"gameplay loop" is the phrase of the last 5 years or so, that's how the big houses are designing these days because it's easier than writing a grand arc with well paced punctuation marks, it also allows you to very quickly scale the game up from 90 minutes to 75 hours by cranking out assets and maps

it's all very competent and engaging enough, i played the HELL out of Odyssey, but it's kinda like video game junk food, you're not going to have a lot of highlights at the end, because even close scrapes and epic battles are comprised of the same moves you did thousands of times. like what i remember most from odyssey were the battles against the mythical creatures and some special arena engagements, and welp that's about 1hr of gameplay lol

i wouldn't blame game developers from thinking we all sound like the itchy and scratchy panel from The Simpsons at this point, because they're close to an interesting synergistic landscape but haven't really GOTTEN there yet
