snergle posted:ide love to get a mad tv or in living color show going. i think there are room for 2 sketch shows on us tv and snl being essentially a gate keeper for alot of people trying to break into the industry is lovely. I've also heard the contracts they force on you are loving absurd after sandler farley and mike myers took off to do movies. Lorne Michaels can't be too mad about them leaving, he's a producer on most of those movies.

Early 90s SNL owned, with Myers, Sandley, Farley, Hartman and everybody else.

Oh, man - Geraldine, "here come the judge", I even watched the animated Flip Wilson special. Weird how he kind of dropped off the face of the earth after that. He was always funny, and then nothing. The variety show on prime time pretty much died out in the late 70's. Pretty sure Carol Burnett was the last one. There were soo many back then, some with famous people (Sonny and Cher), others not so much (Hudson Brothers? Who?). All seemed to have the same format: music by either hosts or guests(generally lip synched), skits, a comedian and every now and then some other talent like juggler.

If you think modern sketch comedy is bad you should try to sit through an episode of Red Skelton.

There was a sketch show about Canadian politics that was pretty funny at the time. Royal Canadian Air Farce I think. EDIT: Obviously old episodes about politics are kinda dated at this point though. RatHat has a new favorite as of 09:06 on Jan 23, 2019 |

The Comedy Channel tried to run a new sketch show called Open Slather a few years back and it was just aggressively unfunny.

Neddy Seagoon posted:Hey, Hey, It's Saturday! was primetime Aussie television well into the 90's. The show originally ran for nearly 3 decades, starting in the early 70s and ending in 1999. They tried reviving it in 2009-10 and the new version was pretty much exactly the same as the old version which turned out to be a bit of a dumb idea when they discovered that the blokey culturally insensitive jokes that were their bread and butter the 80s and 90s didn't fly any more and was pissing off a lot of people. They actually included a blackface skit in one episode and seemed to be genuinely surprised when people were offended.
