It's more that your story conflicts with everything else I've ever heard over the last 15 years with respect to MPRA NFOs.

That doesn’t quite mean that life is better as an MPRA NFO, just that the jet pipeline is that much more miserable. You get three failures for all of flight school in Pensacola, if you hang around for two years doing jet stuff for that much longer you are in the crosshairs to get booted.

It sounds very similar to when I did it all 10 years ago. They get your whole class in a big room at the end, you confirm your requested platform, and they crunch the numbers in another room. Like an hour later they come back, say who got what, and the MPRA guys go home and wait for orders to Jax. The rest of them start ground school immediately and are miserable. One guy in my class cried when he didn’t get MPRA.

Quality of life once you are in the fleet probably varies, and MPRA is notoriously full of uptight jerks, but I’ve heard the same hornet and growler anecdote as well. In conclusion, the navy is a land of contrasts.

This is right after I ripped open my coveralls, underwear, and rear end while scooting on nonskid singing the spongebob song while getting soaked by the topside chemical counterwash sprinklers on the forecastle. The combination of my head getting stuck in a cargo net plus the bleeding rear end made me say "gently caress this, this is loving stupid" very loudly, getting up, and walking back inside the skin of the ship. No one tried to stop me, and all of the people around seemed to understand. I went to my stateroom, took a shower, and threw my ripped clothes and favorite pair of sneakers that were now ruined overboard.

I got a little bit of poo poo from the wardroom for not finishing, but not much. A few sailors talked some poo poo as well, but after a bit of shittalking back nothing ever really came of it and life went on. Fast forward to last year. My mom decided that she was going to do something special for me and bought me one of those bigass framed certificates for crossing the line. It's sat in my closet since, because I personally don't think I should hang it up. I see it as similar to wearing an award I did not earn. She thinks I'm putting way too much thought into it and no one else would ever know or care.

I haven't actually asked other sailors what they think. Am I being an idiot for actually caring?

My dragonback ceremony was the CO on the 1MC giving a speech. Hazing was outlawed a long long time ago and I don't understand how it is being allowed now.

Our Shellbacking was actually fun. It just involved a lot of lore and some events where pretty much everybody just got soaking wet and exhausted before diving into the ocean at the end.

This toned down version was arranged by my LPO who was lucky enough to be on the Topeka for the unique New Years Eve Y2K Dragonbacking, and his poo poo sounded ridiculous

Since my only knowledge of crossing ceremonies is from JAG and that 10-part Carrier docu, I'm not really in a position to judge, but this almost would have made sense to me if you hadn't completed the course.

But you ran through the course in its loving entirety, and then, 8 years later, you were second-guessing yourself because a 50+year old man in diapers, a mop-beard, a fishnet-shirt and lipstick, wielding a paper-mache trident said you couldn't join the clubhouse of ~YE OLDE ORDERRE OF THE DEEPE~ ?

If you can get further north, Florence has a ton of kickass museums and neat stuff to see. Tuscany also has a bunch of really cool towns to take day trips to. Siena was my favorite but I'm biased because one of their districts mascots is a snail.

I was stationed in Naples for two years
generally, the city is a real poo poo hole, advice to not really go bar-hopping is pretty good. You definitely can't be drunk around the city center at night, and maybe it's better if you don't be there at all at night. There are some neat castles and piazzas around there, but even during the day it is all pretty run down. Napoli is the kind of place where everybody's apartment has steel shutters that have no means of opening from the outside on all of their windows and porch doors, and there is garbage everywhere during even the best of times.

That said, Get a real pizza, from a place where they burn wood in their oven. Nothing else will do for the Neapolitans, so it isn't exactly hard to find. Buffalo mozzarella is another pretty important local specialty and will be the first course of any proper supper in the immediate region. There were a couple of sit-down restaurants that were pretty popular with troops there, a place we always just called "mama's" in Lago Patria which I liked and Country House (maybe?) which I didn't like as much. Ideally, try to get a sunday or holiday dinner at someone's house -- lots of restaraunt owners in Italy are 100% without shame about ripping off tourists lmao

See Pompeii. Fuckin amazing ruins, and if you like that, Ercolano is the site of another, better-preserved, less famous set of ruins contemporary to the destruction of Pompeii and the seaside neighborhood there, Portici, is a good place to look for pizza or seafood restaurants

Sorrento is a good recommend, but if you get to there, you're right by the Amalfi coast, which is insanely beautiful as well -- if you're looking at a map, it's the region from Positano east to Amalfi.
