quote:

Washington, D.C. — The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (Bureau) today announced a settlement with Mark Corbett, a broker of contracts offering high-interest credit to veterans.

As described in the consent order, the Bureau found that Corbett violated the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010 by misrepresenting to consumers that the contracts he facilitates are valid and enforceable when, in fact, the contracts are void because veterans’ pension payments are unassignable under federal law; misrepresenting to consumers that the offered product is a purchase of payments and not a high-interest credit offer; misrepresenting to consumers when they will receive their funds; and failing to disclose to consumers the applicable interest rate on the credit offer.

Under the terms of the consent order, Corbett is permanently banned from brokering, offering, or arranging agreements between veterans and third parties under which the veteran purports to sell a future right to an income stream from the veteran’s pension. Corbett must also pay a civil money penalty of $1.

ain't none of that matter at all in a Presidential election because it's a statewide FPTP and the entirety of southern IL has basically 1/5 the population of Cook County

So, again, gently caress any and all of these centrist candidates; they don't get my vote unless they earn it

I sort of wonder if Illinois would be better served if Chicago became its own city-state. Outstate parts of Illinois are rural as hell and have hugely different interests while Chicago wouldn't have to worry about fighting farm towns over actual good urban policy.

Also Chicago seems much more culturally relatable to Wisconsin and Michigan vs. cornland.

Hell, anything south of I-64 should probably just be split between Missouri and Kentucky, because it's ridiculously separate from even central Illinois (which, for flat cornland, fancies itself "cultured").

I mean, we've got hills down here. Shawnee Nat'l Forest takes up the majority of our landmass, and the biggest "city" in southern IL has 44-some-odd thousand people in it.

Of course, 50 cents of every dollar spent in southern IL is outside money, so we'd wither on the vine without actual support (because we've been treated like an inland colony and had all our "wealth" and resources siphoned off to STL and Chicago).

I'm sure that rural NY feels the same way about NYC and I seem to remember rural CA feeling the same way about SF, LA, and SD.

Still, probably the weirdest thing I experienced living near Chicago was going to the MUSI and seeing the "coal mine" exhibit's elevator and realizing "oh, my great-grandad worked that mine before they closed it, shipped all the equipment north, and turned it into some city folk's entertainment"

Alternatively, only read Chuck Boone's posts. Dude does a great job of collecting news and summarizing the horror show that the county has become. There's also great posts from thread regulars who grew up in Venezuela, though only Blue Nation is still there. It's honestly not a bad thread, so much as one that's fine for long stretches of time in between getting blown up by news that attracts D&D or CSPAM posters who seem to think that opposing Maduro automatically means you support some form of US-backed regime change that will make things even worse you guys (though they never quite explain how).

I dunno, I think after our track record in the last couple decades the burden of proof is really on anyone who is pro-regime change by America to explain why this time it'll be different.

Maduro and his people are corrupt and brutal assholes, but that doesn't mean sticking our dick into another hornet's nest is going to make it better.

Does it make a difference that nearly every Latin American country recognized Guaido as legitimate president? Can they pressure Venezuela's military to switch from Maduro?

I've been of the opinion for a while that the best thing the US can do in the vast majority of cases of dickheads loving up their own country and people is to provide humanitarian aid, accept refugees, and sanctions targeted only at the rulers at the top so they can't stash the gains from looting their country abroad.

That said, pretty sure Maduro & Co have also been murdering people. Near as I can tell this is just more flavors of "assholes abound."

The thing here though is that NY has several other decent sized metro areas like Buffalo, Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, etc. aside from NYC and is otherwise dotted with small cities that were business/manufacturing centers in their own right. That's how Michigan and WI are outside of their respective major metros, lots of 50-100k size old industrial cities interspaced with mostly agricultural land (but with hills).

When I go somewhere like rural Illinois or Iowa they feel desolate in comparison being mostly farm land with really tiny farm towns here and there, correct me if I'm wrong however.

I wouldn't say that about WI, if you for example drive from Chicago to Minneapolis once you go past Madison or Milwaukee the largest town you go through is a small tourist trap.

Ohio is definitely what you say though, you're never too far from a moderately sized city.
