“Bryan singer charged with rape” or “nurse rapes patient” seem like worse and less informative titles though? It seems like you’d need to start mangling sentences if you wanted to fit the whole summary and the word rape in every title.

As a thought experiment, each state could pass a law that allows them to collect on federal taxes in place of the federal government in the case of a prolonged shutdown (so they can fund programs like food stamps, feed people in prisons, farm subsidies, etc.) but if we’re following modern monetary theory it would go straight to poo poo as the issuer of the currency effectively no longer exists.

Also if every state went “every state for itself” California and the West coast would be pretty okay while WV and Kansas would be so hosed they’d probably just effectively cease to exist due to an extreme lack of funding to do drat near anything.

This is generally really stupid what if'ing but the regions would be fairly predictable and you'd have all the poo poo states clinging to the nearest huge metro center.

The really interesting discussions are the flyovers and the southeast. Like how many states attach to the I-85 corridor, or where the gently caress does like wyoming go?

WV likely ends up in whatever megaopolis hell hole that emerges from the Ohio population centers, and then gradually fades away over the next half century.

Oh yeah this is stupid as hell to speculate since we’re running in 100% uncharted territory, I’m just saying that there are no scenarios where things work out to be okay if we were to let food stamp money run out. We’re all mega-hosed if it goes that far.

That’s said yeah I have no idea what would happen to the people of Wyoming and the I-85 corridor states, I’d guess most of GA and Alabama would latch to Atlanta and that’s about it. Knowing the absolute little about Atlanta culture that I do, I can’t see the city warmly welcoming the chuds that helped Kemp cheat his way into office and who keep passing “religious freedom” laws hell-bent on making LGBTQ lives’ hell, along with their 200+ year history of treating PoC like poo poo.

I mean, our media has largely shifted to using the term "sexual assault" over "rape", which has the effect of reducing the perceived severity of the crime by conflating rape with lesser crimes like groping into a single term. Same thing with racist/racism/bigotry getting watered-down into more generic, less-impactful umbrella terms. Words have power and meaning and it's disturbing to see the shift happen.

Why is it always all or nothing with these people?

Because the assholes at the top of the Rep party screamed "death panels! Socialism!" when they got their kickback from the insurance industry and all the morons that listen to them started chanting the same without their neurons connecting to realize that's pretty much what we had. Republicans have a very large voting block that's pretty goddamned dumb, racist, and...well...when it comes to patriotism (actually nationalism) they rival the crowds like Stalin and the Kims from NK have in display

No, it's because "rape" normally meant penile penetration of a female (and only a female) by a male (and only a male), against her will. If you can't see any problems with the term, well, okay. "Sorry, miss, but the person who stuck that beer bottle in you didn't actually rape you.". While you call it "conflating rape with lesser crimes", you're ignoring all the equally serious forms of sexual violence that would *not* be called rape. Additionally there is the fact that "rape" is exactly as you point out, a semantically loaded term - accusing someone of rape has always been inflammatory, like lynching black men after accusing them of raping white women... I'm not exactly why it's crucial to keep the term "rape", therefore.

No one is left that can formulate even a faint no to him. He may sign something that ends the shutdown if its given to him because he doesn't read and it would be very easy to lie to him until its too late, he could be out vetoed. But he is a poo poo head that won't act until republicans start shifting without him because he has to be the CEO and the best president of all time, and he can't be a leader if the party moves without or specifically against his commands.

Not saying there aren’t serious news editorial problems at NBC, I’m just not sure that tweet is a good example of it.

We're doing it every day whether you realize it or not and the alternative is crashing the entire economy so I don't think we have the luxury of choosing not to. Everyone at this point is just in "hold your breath and hope you make it out of the burning building before you suffocate" mode.

I think titles that have the word "sexual assault" instead of rape can be mealy mouth, but both titles in the example seemed like stuff where they gave a more specific detail of what happened where it'd be awkward to say like "nurse arrested for raping unconscious patient, also she got pregnant" and just using the word rape is less information like "nurse arrested for rape"

Like yes, some undocumented immigrants commit crimes, just as they get jobs, pay taxes, marry, contribute to GDP and more.

If white people weren't allowed to be CEOs, 100% of financial crimes committed by white CEOs could be prevented.

it's because nothing they do is in good faith. it's like cuomo said - eliminating or reducing poverty would have a massive effect on crime. if you banned guns our homicide and suicide rate would drop precipitously. weirdly they don't want to do either and actively exacerbate those issues. (not to mention that undocumented immigrants commit crime at a lower rate than citizens.)
