I'm a lifelong resident of the area and that fact is a huge reason why I don't move to Minneapolis since it's otherwise a really cool city. As to the climate here I wouldn't judge the other midwestern cities by Minneapolis, yes it's cold and it snows but it's not really notably worse than any other northern city like say in New England.
