It has been rather depressing reading all the post in these forums supporting Maduro and his regime, just for the sake of spite than any legitimate concerns.

I don't know who could be dumb enough to support Maduro, but I haven't seen anyone in this thread doing so. It's a hosed up situation, with possible developments so insanely bad it's hard to see which one is worse which is par for the course for Latin America. Please don't take this as a "both sides are bad" argument, just that it's already a very delicate situation where things are getting weird and unpredictable and the US is acting in a very brazen way with clear second intentions, which is the last thing that could help things get better. This could end up super bad.

As far as I understand, with my admittedly limited knowledge, Maduro is a disaster (even taking sanctions into account), but it's still hilarious that the opposition just went no im president now And by hilarious I mean poo poo is gonna get weird and nasty

Labelling the millions of Venezuelans opposed to Maduro and protesting against his regime US-supported reactionaries is buying into his propaganda and therefore supporting him. Dias posted:As far as I understand, with my admittedly limited knowledge, Maduro is a disaster (even taking sanctions into account), but it's still hilarious that the opposition just went no im president now Read the Venezuela thread. It's not a loving joke. What's happened is that the opposition had previously protested the 2018 presidential elections as illegitimate because no serious candidate (most of those were arrested) was allowed to run against Maduro, who looked like he might have lost. Maduro also has attempted to set up a rival national assembly, clearly going against the constitution and laws of the country, in order to circumvent the assembly where the opposition holds a majority after the 2015 which largely were free and fair, as far as Venezuela goes. So what's happened is that the assembly president declared that upon the new presidential term starting on January 10th that Venezuela has no legitimate president in Maduro and he was now taking over as interrim president (which the constitution provides for) in order to organize and hold elections. That's what the opposition has done. Randarkman fucked around with this message at 22:31 on Jan 24, 2019 |

And given that it would require something resembling a constitutionally justified-ish military coup, it's still pretty crazy and horrible!

Another mining barrage (Brumadinho) has collapsed in Brazil, flooding a village with mining runoff mud and potentially fouling a river that supplies 48 communities with drinking water. A similar incident happened a few years ago in Marianas, which was then the biggest environmental fuckup in history. The justice system basically ruled that it was no one's fault and kept the ball rolling. https://www.bbc.com/portuguese/brasil-47002609 Sephyr fucked around with this message at 19:02 on Jan 25, 2019 |

Caracas had a murder rate of 109 homicides/100,000 people in 2017. Chicago's rate per 100,000 people was 17.52.

So, speaking of Latin Americans having nice things... Line 3 of the Santiago Metro opened earlier this week, and its awesome. It runs from the central east of the Santiago region (La Reina), through downtown, and then northwest to the edge of Quilicura. It uses the same technologies as Line 6, which opened in late 2017. It has pilotless cars, enclosed platforms, LCD displays in the cars...its awesome. It also feels more significant than Line 6, because its a lot longer, and it also opens up a lot more of the city, especially traditionally disadvantaged areas (Independencia, Conchali, Quilicura), whereas Line 6 mostly just paralleled areas that already had service (although Line 6 did a lot to reduce congestion on Line 1). Anyway, I know obviously there is a lot of different news from Latin America, much of it more serious and sad, but I just wanted to share something successful!

as you say santiago i will assume "De Chile". Congrats on the spiffy metro, neighbor. I havent ridden the ones in buenos aires enough to loathe them like ppl from there do, but man, does it get crowded there. It's probably the only downside, cause other than that its reliable fast and generally cheap. How's the crowding in there?

This one opened in the summer, when less people are working, so it doesn't seem too crowded so far. It might get worse in autumn. I probably won't be riding it much for work, since it goes to residential areas. It is also deep underground, compared to the other lines. And the trains are (I think because they are deeper underground), wider bodied, so they can fit more people comfortably. It is nowhere near as packed as Line 1, which could get dangerously crowded. hoiyes posted:If we're gonna rank them, Depending on where and when you ride the Santiago metro, there is a lot of music going on. the only other subway system ive travelled in was in france and i won't even compare it to buenos aires because lmfao. Also I've seen a lot more performers (and incredibly good ones) on the train from Buenos Aires to La Plata or in Buenos Aires itself. The new trains are really really good but based Macri doesn't seem to give a poo poo about them so who knows how long they'll last.

And yes, America is still actually a very powerful state, the lone superpower around today. Leftists care about the rich history of American interference in Latin America because time and time again it has lead to horrific consequences for our comrades in those Latin American countries. We don't care because we want to self-flagellate, we care because nothing good ever comes from American adventurism in Latin America for people in those countries with politics like ours.
