Dear thread,

This is kind of broad but I would like some help expanding my listening into music that's more current than what I listen to. My tastes from childhood to now pretty much ran like 90s alt rock -> late 70s punk -> 70s-80s post-punk and there they have stayed.

It might be a generalisation but I don't care for 21st century revival post-punk at all. Here are about the only things recorded in what could generously be called 'recent years' that I've really taken to:

Everything by The Knife/Fever Ray
James Ferraro's albums Cold, NYC Hell 3am, and Skid Row
Everything by Glass Candy (and I suppose Johnny Jewel stuff more broadly)

I suppose I enjoy the sort of art-rock ethos in this music as confidently busted out of warmed-over genre conventions, so I would appreciate recommendations that might match that.

Thank you very much.

Try Parquet Courts, since you like both art rock and post punk. Also, maybe St.Vincent?

While I'm here, some recent hardcore that isn't meathead adjacent, please

I'm not sure how much you've sampled, the the post-punk revival of the early 00s never completely died but has changed over the years. Bands like Viet Cong/Preoccupations, Ought, and Omni are not drenched in melodrama compared to Interpol and Editors.

If you're into the noisy stuff like the Pop Group, Birthday Party, etc maybe try the first Liars album (They Threw Us All Into a Trench). It has aged fairly well compared to a lot of what came from that NYC scene.

Talking to my wife I realize that while I have rock / metal musis that is either black fronted / entire band, women fronted / entire band, I don't have a band that is black female fronted.

What are some good rock, metal, prog bands from some non-white dudes?

Unfortunately there's basically no african metal bands worth listening to. The South Asian scene is a better bet in terms of quality if you just want metal from places that don't have very big scenes, for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejSAnjs3KNo)

Gonna listen to some more Witch Mountain for sure. Alabama Shakes didn't do anything for me for the few Youtube tracks I clicked. Downtown Boys was too 90s for me, and I hate punk so X-Ray Spex didn't work for me at all.

For the other bands just start from the start.

Maybe The Suburbs or Buzzcocks too if you want something closer to Pink Flag Wire.

I am kind of a metal newbie but there are subsets of it I like, primarily droney or stonery ones, and would like to know more of.

Things I really like: Sunn0))) and Earth, Growing's The Sky's Run Into the Sea, uh some of Black Sabbath's slower stuff like for example their self-titled track and War Pigs.

I do NOT so much like speedy metal, growly vocals, or things with a lot of beat, like for example one of the only Sunn0))) tracks I don't love is The Gates of Ballard.

Any obvious things I ought to check out?

the band Bong from the UK will be right up your alley. Check out their album Stoner Rock (it's just called that, it's a drone album not a rock album) as well as the rest of their discography.

A while ago I got really into Carissa Wierd's album Songs About Leaving — I just love those piano/string arrangements and those overlapping vocal tracks. I've tried to get into other slowcore but nothing's really done it for me yet. Tried to get into Low's The Great Destroyer and while I liked some of the slower tracks, there was too much mid-tempo rock that felt pretty disposable. Any recommendations?

Any recommended albums for conscious hip-hop along the same lines as Kendrick Lamar? I've gotten into his music in the past couple of years and I'd like to hear more political hip-hop stuff. There are 'best of' lists out there, but they tend to be hit or miss. I'd be more interested in getting the opinions of more seasoned hip hop fans.

Public Enemy’s run from Nation of Millions to Apocalypse 91 is like the apex of political hip-hop
Dead Prez’s Let’s Get Free is a good left wing rap record.

Not that neither of these sound much like Kendrick.

Secretly force socialism, communism and imperialism types of government onto the people of the United States of America.

definitely more light-hearted but still frequently deeply political, Run the Jewels 2 & 3

also a bunch of Swet Shop Boys stuff takes a political tack, mostly addressing anti-Muslim profiling

Here are some other artists to get you started:

Common - Really can't go wrong with most of his early material but "Like Water for Chocolate", "Be", and "Finding Forever" are my favorite albums.
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides and The Ecstatic are incredible.
Talib Kweli - Check out his album with Mos Def titled "Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star". His solo work is good too, can start with Quality and move along from there.
Ice Cube - Usually associated with gangsta rap, Ice Cube's solo work after NWA is very political. Start with Amerikka's Most Wanted
Black Thought - Anything he has done with The Roots (Undun, Illadelph Halflife, Things Fall Apart). Also check out Streams of Thought Vol. 1 & 2
Lupe Fiasco - Check out his latest album "Drogas", really powerful stuff.
