I know today was a big win, but I can't help but feel anxious about the possibility of the National Emergency declaration in three weeks. The court packing that's gone on and the stolen SCOTUS seats have done severe damage to my trust in the federal judiciary.

I hope Pelosi and Schumer have plenty more rabbits up their sleeves, I have a sinking feeling they're going to need them to make sure the wall dies forever next month.

it will be caught in the courts for a while and as will people suing because trump wants to take their land for his dumb loving wall. its hosed. more likely, trump will try to push for another shutdown.

There's also, you know, the entire first half of his presidency where it wasn't a "national emergency".

Honestly it feels like the more Trump says he's going to do something, the less likely he is to do it. I seem to recall there being a brief period where Trump was also saying that he was going to unilaterally close the Mexican border completely. That doesn't seem to have panned out.

If he thought the national emergency thing would have worked I think he would have done it two weeks ago when he did the prime time address. That's when the rumors first started and it seemed set for that was the reason before Trump backed off and the address was just a stump speech. I think someone explained to Trump that it will just end up lost in the courts and die and nothing would happen before 2020. So he backed off.

They're dangling it now because its the only "leverage" they have. Its not real leverage but they're very bad negotiators. He'll still do it in 21 days because he's got nothing to lose, but the idea of the Wall happening any time soon died when Trump gave in today. Everyone knows that, including - I think - Trump. Now they're just struggling to save face.

Donald Trump is a spineless coward who has not once in his 2+ years as President taken a principled stance and held to it. Every instance you can think of is a case where Mitch and/or Ryan had his back and did the dirty work.

I think organized labor and activists have seen the light this shutdown. The day the federal workers miss a paycheck is the day they strike en masse and the shutdown ends. LaGuardia was just the preview, now that they know they can provoke a reaction like today, it'll be repeated and on a larger scale.

quote:

"To the Republicans in the crowd, I say: take back your party, the Grand Old Party," Pelosi said at the annual gathering of U.S. mayors. "America needs a strong Republican Party, not a rubber stamp."

No it doesn't, Nancy, and Republicans don't need to "take back" their party. What they have now is what they've been working tirelessly towards for decades. Time to put away the old delusion that we can have a friendly, principled debate with the GOP.

Yeah, there's this pervasive idea that goes through the right and comes out of the right. The right insists Trump is a strong leader and brave fighter for his issues. The left says that's nonsense but that he's a crazed madman who will go down for his racism and pettiness and greed. Neither of these is really true from what we've seen. Crazed madman or strong leader, both require someone to fundamentally be principled and own poo poo. Trump doesn't have that in him, almost to a pathologically degree. He passes the buck and scapegoats people at every turn and always has. If you push him, he WILL back down. He's managed what he has because he had Ryan and McConnell bending over backwards for him. With Ryan/The House gone more pressure falls on McConnell and the Senate and they won't go down with Trump on dying issues. And he won't stand alone and lead.
