Man, I love the adapative weapon models - the Orion gets LRMs circling it's bigass laser cannon arms instead of just a rectangular rack if you put them on there.

Just caught the game blatantly cheating. Opfor has a King Crab, which obviously I want. I'm at full morale and everyone has Called Shot Mastery. I put my first two AC/2 precision shots into the head to put it at 1 structure. Then either I missed the head completely with my next 15 precision shots and over 80 missiles, or the head stops taking damage.

If they're LRMs then only the first missile from each launcher's salvo can headshot iirc.

Half of them were SRMs. Even if the same thing applies to SRMs, though, that's still Pretty loving Unlikely% to happen.

Roguetech has a new system which massively increases the importance of sensors and actually disables them for the first turn for both sides so you can only get shots on stationary targets if you stumble upon them visually

except I played one match where an an enemy Naga with two clan Arrow IVs decided not to follow that script and put two huge missiles into my evasion tank's CT. That's a restarted mission with no regrets, I think

yeah there are some maps I'll withdraw from if things aren't going perfectly in the first 3-4 rounds. On Roguetech you get hella bonuses for elevation and a few maps start you off right at the foot of a mountain, and charging up those can be brutal, especially when you start getting hard focused by the inevitable LRM boat reinforcements

This is stupid, but for some reason I'm really struggling to come up with a loadout for my Atlas II that I really like. I mean they're all fine because it has so much free tonnage, but they all seem kind of :geno: on actual missions. Maybe it's just the RNG loving with me.

I'm having more fun with my King Crab, which is so much worse on paper. It's literally nothing but two AC/20+++, TTS++, JJ, extra armor and heat sinks. But every battle is basically:

So far in my current career, I've lost two pilots: one headshotted by a Hunchback's AC20 as it came out of the fog of war and another headshotted by Hunchback in melee after I had blasted its AC20 to smithereens before it could fire.

If I could do warcrimes on 4G pilots, I would.

The Demogorgon is tired of your silly human bickering!

I spread myself way too thin on games and am generally terrible at them so figured I'd post here for your amusement. A friend got me this game in the steam sale because word of mouth I saw around had me interested. Absolutely worth it for the soundtrack alone, drat it is good. I haven't played BattleTech since the 90s though and that was just a couple times. So here's a few things that have popped up playing the unmodded game on easy.

- Dekker shouldn't be alive. I charged him down the road then off into the woods on turn one of a random mission. The enemy activated and first mech to go walked out of fog of war and fired one shot, getting a critical headshot and killing him through 5 pips of evasion and tree cover. Yeah I just quit to windows and restarted the next day.
- I got an AC20++ and threw it on a mech to try out but only added one pip of ammo not thinking how much I'd need. My friend popped in to watch a steam stream of me playing. So I launched a mission to show him the combat, forgetting that I had a mech repairing from the last mission and Dekker was on the DL for a few more days. I had to use another light mech pilot who didn't have sensor lock, and my mech which had the AC20++ and nothing else. Plus stock Glitch and Behemoth. The mission turned out to be against 4 light mechs who ran rings around me while I whiffed and ran out of ammo. My friend quit watching in disgust at my incompetence and I had to punch them to death to finish the mission.
- On one of the first plot missions with the prison I got my team into great positions to focus fire on the enemy as they came to me. Then Kool-Aid Kamea burst through the wall into the middle of all the baddies and got lit up. I had to sprint my main character up there which led all the enemies to focus me instead. Got KO'd and had my MC spend 2 months out of action.
- I specced out Behemoth as a tank and gave her the mech with the most hp and armor. Then later I got an LRM20++ and found which mech had the most missile slots and loaded it up as a missile boat. You guessed it. My frontline tank is the artillery. Though hilariously she did great in the last 2 missions by getting knockdowns left and right while still soaking a lot of fire.
- Playing on easy just for the story doesn't seem to be a great idea. It just loads up the enemies with more of the same light mechs each time. Hopefully I just need to advance the story a bit to get access to some more mediums and maybe see a heavy or assault someday.
- Knocking down enemies means I can only do targeted attacks on the downed enemy and no matter my range my best odds to hit anything are usually 35%. That seems weird to me. I've taken to doing coup de grace by just running up and stomping on them but that tends to make them fully explode which is bad for salvage. Working on getting tactics 2 on Glitch and my MC.

Anyway I'm an idiot and can probably do with studying up on the basics and finding a manual or something. I'm thinking I need to either restart on normal diff and do some thinking and reading about how this game works, or just edit myself in an atlas or clan mech or imperator class titan or whatever and go to town sleepwalking through the storyline. Man that March on Axylus though. Chills.

That's a bit misleading - it's your normal chances to hit, then it skews the shot to have a greater chance to hit that particular location. So an 80% medium laser shot and a 90% LRM15 shot will still be 80 and 90% to hit, but it may be 35% to hit specifically the Center Torso (in the missiles' case, this means about a third will hit the torso), 14% to the Left Torso, etc. Targeted shots are asking you what part you want to gently caress up in particular

Ahh drat, I think I missed my first two probably by being too close with a PPC or something, and then just didn't bother trying since. I either leave them alone until they get back up or walk over and curb stomp. I'll mess with it some more now that I'm getting better at knockdowns and weapon ranges.

Putting points into Tactics to get Called Shot Bonus and Called Shot Mastery will help immensely. Any mechwarrior can pick these up. I can't remember how many points it takes to get to them though.

A few beginner's tips on outfitting, since fielding better mechs gives you more leeway while figuring out the finer points of tactics:

- Take the Bulwark skill (Guts 5) on everyone.
- Never leave ammo in the center torso.
- Max head and front CT/ST armor on all your mechs. Arms too if they have any weapons on them.
- Dedicated LRM boats can afford to have less than max armor if it means packing more tubes (ie CN9-A with 2xLRM20 + 4 tons ammo), but be judicious.
- SRMs and MLas are the the best general weapons, followed by AC20 and LRMs (which are more specialized, and benefit from having the mech+pilot built around them). LLs are good, AC5s less so. The rest range from bad to really bad and are just very rarely worth bothering with.
- Support Weapons (SLas, MGs) are exceptionally damage efficient, but it's dangerous to get into melee range once you start running into 55+ ton mechs on the regular. Note a melee hit strips 2 evasion pips if you have support weapons equipped.

Conspiratiorist posted:

The good skill combos atm:

Guts 1 / Tactics 2 (general use)
Guts 2 / Pilot 1 (brawlers and skirmishers)
Guts 1 / Gunnery 2 (AC20 mediums and LRM builds only)

Conspiratiorist posted:

Design Notes:
- Ammo goes in the legs. They are tough and have a low chance to get hit compared to other sections, and while getting crit and knocked down sucks, it sucks more to get crit and instantly lose several rare weapon variants.

- Jump Jets go in the torsos. Even if you lose your legs you can still jump just fine - unless you also put your JJs in the legs, ensuring your mobility is compromised no matter what.
- If playing correctly you shouldn't be taking any unintentional rear shots at all, such that when you do it should be a calculated risk (ie a few potshots), therefore you don't need much back armor. I slap in just enough to block a medium laser so that I don't immediately start rolling criticals in such a case.
- Empty side torsos, on the other hand, need no such protection. If the enemy hits them and starts doing structure there, that's a net win - means you didn't get hit on the bits you actually care about.
- Lopsided builds are better than more distributed designs. If you have nothing on the right arm and nothing on the right torso, that's 29.6% of hits going on fully expendable sections. It's effectively ablative HP.

Empty segments, and putting ammo away from your weapons, gives you much better control over your HP. It's what makes designs like the Menturion so good in this game - it both punches above its weight with an efficient weapons package, and has the structure of its arms and right torso as entirely disposable HP.

The starting Campaign lineup is actually very decent, since the Vindicator is a solid chassis and the SHD-2H and Centurion (which you get in short order) are practically best-in-class. The stock fits are terrible, though, so here are some examples of what you can do with them:

Spider:

You can't fix a bad chassis, but you can turn it into less of a liability by clipping its wings for more armor, and adding 2 small lasers gives half-way decent shooting when the opportunity arises; its main job is to stomp on light vehicles anyway. Needless to say, this is the first mech you should swap out of your active roster when you get the chance.

Blackjack:

An awkward chassis to work with given the overall state of ballistics in the game. It doesn't really have the tonnage or resilience to comfortably fit an AC20, and while dual AC5s make for a somewhat effective dedicated sniper, ultimately Large Lasers win out due to their accuracy (Lasers have an inherent +1 to hit, with an additional +1 from being arm-mounted in this case) and weight savings allowing it to also pack a couple Medium lasers to turn the mech into a competent short/mid range platform.

Vindicator:

Now we're getting into the good stuff; this guy kicks rear end. In career mode it's your biggest starting mech and will carry you through the early game, in campaign not so but still solid. It runs cool, mobile with jump jets, fully armored up it's reasonably resilient even with its 45 ton tag, and while I prefer not having weapons on the arms, in this case having the bulk of your firepower with to-hit bonuses really squeezes that extra oomph out of it, particularly early game when you're strapped for accuracy on your mechwarriors.

Centurion:
The brawling centurion is awesome, and the best damage dealer in the medium class, but I already talked about it in my self-quote above, so let's try something else.

Simple, effective. The key thing here is assigning it to a Breaching Shot mechwarrior, which lets it split fire and always deliver its full damage even through Guard/Cover - thats what brings its numbers up to brawling levels of DPR, as otherwise you'd be better off with just another brawler. Oh yeah, and if you catch a mech in the open, this is tons of stability damage.

Shadow Hawk:

Brawler. Why would you do anything else with it? It's fast, it's got 3 missile hardpoints, it punches for 85 melee damage plus a small laser on top. The GRF-1N is overall better due to its hardpoint placement, but it's marginal; this is a really good stompy robot. And speaking of stomping, it can step on and guaranteed insta-kill all but the heaviest vehicles.

Man, I put way more armor on than that. I like to get stuck in though. I am also bad and armor can make up for some mistakes.

Haven't used a single LRM boat so far in career mode; long range has been sniping only first with the 2xLL Panther build earlier in the thread and currently with a PPC + AC/5 Shadowhawk. Blasphemy, I guess, but a beefy backliner like that has come in handy. Had one base defense mission where a lance of lights came from one direction then another lance of 2 lights and 2 vehicles came from the other a turn or two later when my lance was committed and the sniperhawk had to turn around and punch fools.

Also on this mission, I'm willing to excuse a lot with the reinforcement system, but what the gently caress is instantly teleporting 4 assault mechs in a square one tile out of sprint range of my own Banshee, 3 Victors and a Stalker, just as a gently caress you trap? I killed the first wave, captured the base, then three turns after reinforcements are announced, they just spawn in immediately and 3 AC20s go up its rear end in a top hat. gently caress you! At least the pilot lived this time, though the mech had its last leg shot off after I DFA'd to keep the ac20s from going through the chest (it blew a leg off).

The Demogorgon is tired of your silly human bickering!

I followed advice, did much better, and found 1/3 an atlas in a store which probably wasn't worth the money this early in the game but I can dream. Did 3 missions with only Decker getting wounded, once, when a tank blew off his leg in the first round. C'mon, Decker. A tank? Shameful. No more reload resurrections Decker, but if you survive until I get the other 2/3 Atlas you get to pilot it. At least once.

The dumbassery did continue though. Did an escort mission and I was ready for them this time after getting caught off guard on the last one with my guys stuck in the woods and the caravan shooting way off ahead without me. This time I got set up in a killing zone and the 3 caravan vehicles drove into the landing site and I was between them and the enemy. After a few rounds of trading pot shots I'm like, why aren't they leaving. Pan around and sure enough there's the 4th convoy member way back in a river at the start. I guess he was bringing up the rear and I got too far away and he decided it was best to sit tight? Had to run Decker back for him. Thankfully my better optimized mechs easily handled the enemy, mostly because they were the ones stuck in the mountainside woods while I could reposition freely on the peaks to hit their rear each turn. Good times.
