Zwabu posted:Is it possible for primary chat to be segregated into that thread? Or are we to have two primary threads, this one being "primary PLUS"? As more candidates announce and the primary begins in earnest, it will be functionally impossible to segregate primary chat from US politics. It's sort of the inherent problem of having a US politics megathread, although I can discuss with the other mods if there is interest in a simple blanket ban of primary chat itt.

Kinda like how black cops can be even more lovely to black people, poor people who come up rich as gently caress can be some of the meanest, most selfish motherfuckers.

I guess to steelman the point Tibalt is making: we should treat videos like these as political ads, because there’s a non-trivial chance that’s what they are. Probably from primary opponents rather than Putin, and it doesn’t make them automatically wrong or dishonest - often the most devastating political ads are precisely the most brutally honest. (See: any 2016 ad involving the phrase “grab ‘em by the pussy.”) But it does mean we should be a little less trusting and a little more willing to look for external context than we otherwise would be. For example, in this specific case, the policy was poo poo and the speech was poo poo, but it turns out only 20 people were actually prosecuted, and going by the video I’d assumed it was significantly more. And now I look at what I assume is that chronic truancy law, subsection b) looks an awfully lot like it’s saying that actually people found guilty under the law don’t go to jail at all - they get referrals to social services and mandatory meetings and so on, and then only face any punishment at all if that all fails. And I certainly wouldn’t have guessed that from the video.

Primary chat should be it's own thread because there's just so much going on. In USpolitics rn, it will drown out everything else. Like a bunch of cops got shot, Manaforts sentencing is being pushed back, Ilhan is doing poo poo and Dingells laying down some sweet burns but by all means let's argue about Kamala Harris(with some dogwhistles for good measure!) For 8 pages.

I personally think Harris had disqualified herself but let's be honest. America eats up lovely retributive programs like the truancy program. This won't impact her anymore than the super predators thing did Clinton. You may hope better, but I think we're still too early in shifting people's minds about our justice system. Not that we shouldn't try, I'm just cynical about the electorate.

Lol nah you're cool, I'm thinking of the person who claimed to know several poor people that "just didn't give a poo poo" and essentially blamed them for the inability to get out of their poor circumstances. It is good that some people actually are capable of crawling out of poverty, it is bad to assume that others aren't because of some moral failing, and not the fact that our system is broken on nearly every level that matters to people in poverty. None of this poo poo happens in a vacuum and to tie it back in to Howard Schultz, a (white) guy born into a poor neighborhood in 1955 probably has a good chance of making something of himself (and becoming an fygm dirtbag in the process) but the obstacles in place to someone in 2019 are far worse across the board. Koalas March posted:Those kind of people are the worst, because they deeply believe that since they succeeded anyone should be able to and usually end up being extra resentful of poor people after the fact because they are misplacing their resentment of their prior life in poverty. Yeah I work with people in poverty and even among people who are still living in poverty there are hierarchies and the desire to present as "one of the good ones" who "deserves" help. Right wing propaganda that has poisoned the social service well pretty much since The New Deal is insidious and wide ranging.
