This does not cause spoilage, but rather forms an external "crust" on the meat's surface, which is trimmed off when the meat is prepared for cooking. These fungal species complement the natural enzymes in the beef by helping to tenderize and increase the flavor of the meat. The genus Thamnidium, in particular, is known to produce collagenolytic enzymes which greatly contribute to the tenderness and flavor of dry-aged meat. That said I'd have zero confidence in meat that was handed to me with its own ecosystem growing on it, so...

It would take hundreds of years for lichen to grow to that size considering it grows like 2mm a year. So that's likely some preserved mammoth that was dug up by some medieval dude who didn't know what he was missing, and this guy found it sitting on the edge of a bog so he took it home.

Today I paid another vicarious culinary visit to the US via the fevered imaginations of Lidl's food buyers: I don't think I've heard of stuffed schnitzels being a thing outside Germany, but they are trying - see that authentically American tex-mex filling! I do not think they are trying any more - peanut flippsen must be one of the most german things I've ever seen, (though wikipedia now tells me they are actually extremely Israeli.) With a hand in to show scale - this is the largest bag of snacks/crisps I have ever seen. You could fit at least one, maybe two small children into this bag.
