I think it might be the second one. It’s pretty early in the season, before the show became entirely about jerseys and patterned shirts that make me smell burnt popcorn.

Oh hell yeah I'm down for this. Saw him in 1991 after he was released from prison and it was, uh, quite the show. That was during his all-naked-except-for-a-dog-collar phase.

I'm all hyped for Velvet Buzzsaw and figured now would be a good time to finally watch Nightcrawler, only to discover it's no longer streaming on Netflix or Prime. Or anywhere else I can see. I guess I could shell out an extra $4 to rent it on prime or whatever. I should probably watch all the movies I have in my various queues instead of just thinking about watching them. Especially when it comes to Netflix.

Maybe I'll watch Enemy instead. I'm pretty sure that's been on my Netflix list for like 3 years at this point. I just need some Jake G right now.

Nightcrawler is worth the price of admission. I’m not really equipped with the right vocabulary to describe it but it’s one of the most bonkers and engrossing movies I’ve seen in years

Watch them both. They are both great. Do not skip night crawler though. It’s so good.

I bought the blu ray to watch before velvet buzzsaw comes out. It was dirt cheap I think like 6 bucks on prime.

Ok so I watched Enemy and that was good as hell. And only 90 minutes! I already knew the story and the ending and all that, but I'm still unsure of what to make of it now that I've actually seen it. Those are pretty much the best kinds of movies, as far as I'm concerned.

If you liked Enemy and are dying for another Jake G fix, watch Prisoners, by the same director (the great Denis Villeneuve).

But don't skip Nightcrawler, either!

It's a sports movie. He starts out as a ne'er do well screwup who finds a passion, gets a rival, meets the girl who is intrigued by the up and comer, has an actual "getting better" montage. That scene where he starts believing in himself and stages the body is what snapped it all into place for me. The music turns uplifting as he rises to the challenge and starts to succeed. It's fantastic.

I watched Polar. It just flat suffers from confusing "edgy and cruel" with "cool." It's been a while since I've seen something that just seemed written and produced by people who were just mean. What a waste of Mads.

Yeah, I was willing to give it a shot but the way it reveled in killing bystanders and weird torture poo poo got me to turn it off halfway through.

Nightcrawler really came out of nowhere for me and is one of the most memorable films of the past five years. It really, really reminds me of the first half of Repo Man which is my favorite movie of all time.

Also I’m watching Deadwood on Prime for the first time and it is much better than I expected. Is that true for Boardwalk Empire too? I’m a sucker for period pieces

Boardwalk Empire was good. It changed as it went on in interesting ways. I'd say it's almost as good as Deadwood but spread out a little bit more and no one as quotable and powerful a presence as Swearingen in it. There were a couple smaller arcs that just weren't as interesting but more than made up for by some badass stuff.

I wouldn't call Polar a good film, but I enjoyed it well enough. I was confused why everything was so garish but then I read it's a comic adaptation.

I was starting to drift a bit until the assassin's went all ed-209 on the fat guy. Seemed to pick up after that.

The garishness is probably more to do with it being a Jonas Åkerlund movie.

I struggled with Boardwalk Empire at times. Like, technically, it's good. But I sort of feel like if you've seen one show about organized crime, you've kind of seen it all? But this time, with FLAPPERS, and a young Al Capone. I don't think I got around to watching the final season.

But if that's right up your alley, you'll probably love it.

Velvet Buzzsaw is great and extremely weird and unconventional, maybe better than Nightcrawler

wizardofloneliness
Dec 30, 2008

I watched Velvet Buzzsaw and while I didn't like it as much as I'd hoped I would still say it's pretty decent overall. I felt it didn't really go far enough in terms of the art world satire or the supernatural aspects. The art world stuff is funny and all, but nothing I haven't seen in basically every other movie about the art world. And the supernatural/horror stuff didn't really make much of an impression on me. A lot of it was quite a bit goofier than I anticipated, although the premise is pretty silly to begin with so I wouldn't really say this is a negative. I just thought it was sort of tame in general and definitely not as weird as I was hoping for.

I did very much enjoy watching Jake Gyllenhaal cry and freak out, especially when his eyes get all buggy. I liked that Morf uses a flip phone even though this takes place in the modern day. The names are all pretty great too, Jon Dondon was my favorite.

Teenage Fansub

Apart from the arm bit it was oddly tame and cut away from nastiness that I thought it should have been indulging in.
And stuff like mistaking bags of garbage for art is real trite satire.

edit: For positives, Jake was committed, and the deal making and exchanging of art and people was kinda interesting.

Yeah, I liked that part but was sort of disappointed considering a lot of it was in the trailer. In regards to Josephina, I was reminded of Twin Peaks, when Josie gets turned into a doorknob. I always liked that scene and its hokey effects because it was just weird and unexpected, but here it was just kind of hum-drum.

I sort of complained about it being goofier than I thought, but in retrospect I think it should have leaned into that a lot more. Jake Gyllenhaal is great in this though, his performance is 90% of what I like about the movie. Morf is such a stupid and funny character, although I thought his crying to Josephina about actually liking her ex-boyfriend's exhibit was oddly touching.

Holy smokes, I loved VELVET BUZZSAW. It was a reeeaallly different vibe from Nightcrawler, much more genre while still being a pitch-black comedy. But, dang... what a treat of a weird-rear end horror movie

edit: I can tell this will be a divisive movie, even just from this thread. I think the camp and the silliness worked in its favor. Movies about the art world always run the risk of feeling like they are huffing their own farts, so I think the genre-ness helped it go down smooth. Nightcrawler was a great sleazy character study, this is more like a classic 80s horror romp with some really fun performances. However, I don't blame anyone who didn't vibe on it. It's definitely not for everyone.
