I hated Velvet Buzzsaw. I went in all ready to like it, and I'm easy to please. Not a single likable character in the film, the critic was so pretentious and the scene where he was all catty at the funeral, making fun of the casket, etc. was eye-rolling because at that point in the film I got it - he's a terrible person and I'm already praying for a terrible death for him. It's satire on ~the art world~ but it didn't try anything new, everyone already assumes it's full of pretentious jerks trying to prove their heads can fit furthest up their own rear end, so it was just a Final Destination for people somehow less charismatic than dumb teenagers... and with less-ironic deaths.

I wanted a movie based on the Sphere though, that was a cool exhibit. I'm actually interested in how movies like this get art exhibits and paintings - especially the dark, haunting paintings that were the subject of the movie - into the production. Someone has to make them, right? Are they real art exhibits just rented out for the movie?

Russian Doll takes a very familiar presence and makes it feel new again. I don't want to say much more except that it's beautifully done and I can't wait to rewatch it.

Definitely one of the strongest shows I've seen in a while.

I didn't expect Buzzsaw to deliver on the horror aspects and I was still disappointed. It definitely got Final Destination-y too.

Man, Polar is really bizarre. I hated the first hour with the Totally Wacky Assassins straight out of a Smokin' Aces knockoff. Once they were gone, I liked the stuff with Mads looking for revenge and I was hoping the last half could be salvaged, but that ending was just awful.

I kinda wish they would have done a straight up Brett Eastman Ellis style black comedy about the world of high art and left out the possessed paintings. Just an hour and a half of Gyllehal being an awesome dickhead. The evil art was somehow- impossibly- the weakest point and felt like an unintentional message about outsider voices gaining legitimacy through established institutions being a cultural disease vector.

Check out The Square, that movie does a way better job on absurdist black comedy. Lots of clever bits and the whole premise is satire on contemporary art. I enjoyed the movie yet also left feeling disconnected, perhaps it's better to look at The Square as if it were a bunch of short films put together.

Your cage isn't getting any bigger.
It's hard for me to think of Velvet Buzzsaw as anything else but a comedy. The funniest joke is that there is nothing special about Dease's art at all, apart from his tragic past lending them some sort of resonance, which the art community readily exploits to give it significance so they can profit of them. And it's not his art that kills people, but it instead gives "new life" to the other art surrounding it, recontextualizes them, and kills of any pretentious bastard who wanted to profit of it.

And what does it end on? His artwork selling for five dollars at the corner. Hell, the final shot is of his kitchiest painting too.

I was seriously smitten by the first episode of Russian Doll. The rest of the show didn't quite live up to the hype it created in me, but it was still a pretty good show. I love Natasha Lyonne now. Her performance reminded me of Giulietta Masina in Nights of Cabiria, which I adore.

If there were no supernatural elements at all and instead was about people murdering the competition - or even murdering their own artists to get a boost in the fame of their work - it would have been better. As is, it's a half-baked Stephen King idea that he rejected in his cocaine-fueled days.

What struck me about Velvet Buzzsaw was just how shallow its critiques were compared to The Square. The characters in Buzzsaw talk constantly about how art is commercialized and profit-driven but Gilroy doesn't seem to understand how museums actually run and operate. There's no (The Square spoiler) migrant child getting blown up on YouTube in an attempt to attract more ticket sales or expensive soirees for entitled donors. Instead, Velvet Buzzsaw relegates the mechanics of the industry to a bunch of half-heard phone calls.

Still, I love trashy horror movies and this was a halfway decent bit of trashy horror. The only thing that annoyed me was the gallery owner getting killed by her tattoo.

Man I definitely disagree with the latter. 3 was the best season but the final two just stunk to high heaven imo. How many shots did we need of Chalky looking at that dancer? Harrow's story line should've ended with the season 3 finale.

I did not like Velvet Buzzsaw. It had some real loveliness in the direction, and there were some beautiful images throughout. I didn’t mind the shallow characters or the predictable jabs of its satire, but the complete lack of urgency in the plot really bored me. It felt mostly like you could switch around the order of the deaths without any real effect on the narrative; nobody in the story really has much else to do except to be kind of lovely and die.

You're wrong. Boardwalk Empire followed the same arc as Mad Men, where in the beginning it was all about "Aren't the 1920/60's so wacky???" And then at the end it was "People just suck and are hosed up in their own way." They're both amazing character studies.

I didn't think I'd like Velvet Buzzsaw based on the trailer but in the end I enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for art world satire, so if you're tired of that genre I'd stay away. The casting is great throughout, and I don't remember Rene Russo ever being so good. The best part was when the gallery opened with Toni Collette's exsanguinated corpse at the base of the sphere and everyone thought it was part of the exhibit. I'd totally get a print of the baboon mechanics piece if I could find one.

It's kinda like the Marvel movies, but not quite. I liked it. Helps that the antagonist, despite being sorta more towards supernatural, is rather grounded with his motivations. Unlike the other recent movies, where it's always about ending the world.

The plot doesn't involve saving the universe, galaxy, planet or even city really so in that way it transcends most of the others. If you enjoyed the first you'll enjoy this, but it's still a Marvel movie at heart.

Ant-Man is nice because it's one of the few movies that makes the ex-wife's new fiance just a nice guy and not secretly an evil monster that the main character has to expose to get his wife back.
