Yeah, the jokes about race in that movie weren't "Haha, black people" but "Haha, look how ignorant and cruel the white people are about black people"

I'm not sure you'd get the same level of talent. There are still people who don't get what Robert Downey Jr's character was parodying in Tropic Thunder and that was the opposite of subtle. Blazing Saddles 2020 wouldn't get that limited benefit of the doubt. Part of Blazing Saddles success was the great cast and crew. Too many people would be hesitant to put their names on that movie now.

Couples would go to pornos for date night in the 70's. 10 years later they had to change DIE to DIET on a movie poster because people freaked out. I can see Mel Brooke's point. Ever since the 80's we've had one hell of a stick up our butts.

I don't think you can find a single recent page in these forums without someone virtue-signaling or poo-pooing someone's insensitivity to their pet trigger. I completely abandoned the Disney World thread in T&T about a year ago when several posters called me a racist for making fun of Brazilian high school tourists (a known and very common gripe among Disney World fans). gently caress that poo poo, I don't need it.

People who used to hang around in alt.tasteless (for example) gravitated naturally to the SA forums when they showed up, and this was a really, really funny place; that's why I joined. But now there's always a fistful of people in every thread, looking around for something to be offended by...and then voice their disapproval. Almost all successful comedy requires a victim — but now you're not allowed to victimize anybody, regardless of context. I'd like to know: who here has a real, serious problem with Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder? If you do, you've completely missed the point of Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder. Or you don't care, and you just want to tell other people how good you are how bad they are.

I get that some people get their hackles up when political correctness is mentioned, but there's being kind and considerate and then there's beaurocritizing comedy, which is what Cleese and Gilliam (and Brooks, I assume) were talking about. If people consider their works hateful, I honestly think they've missed the point.

Tim probably had a bunch of holy hand grenades. But to your credit, there is a cartoon monster.

The girl however, is not a witch. They even admit they dressed her up so they could burn her. The reason, presumably, is that being a peasant is boring and a witch burning is their equivalent for football.

In Brazil, when the workers in Sam's department are sneaking snippets of a western film when their boss isn't looking, the film music is the same theme that plays during Lancelot's rampage at Swamp Castle.

There's a (now defunct from the looks of it) blog where a lady did some really thoughtful reviews of movies and one of her biggest subtle points taken from the movie is that Sam is Jill.

This Ruthless World posted:

Consider a few vignettes that form a pattern. Sam dreams of being an angel and making love to a beautiful woman. He later meets a woman in real life who looks exactly like the woman in his recurring fantasy — which already suggests that she is a creature of his imagination. The second time Sam encounters Jill, in Mrs. Buttle’s apartment, he sees Jill’s reflection in a fragment of a shattered mirror, which is positioned at such an angle that Sam appears to be looking directly at it, but instead of seeing his own reflection, he sees Jill’s face. When he grabs the mirror, Jill disappears and he sees his own reflection.

Jill is Sam’s opposite. She is brave, empowered by her convictions, and articulate. She is brazenly outspoken in her contempt for the regime and combative towards government officials in her efforts to extricate Mr. Buttle. Sam, by contrast, is someone who has always chosen the path of the least resistance, going so far as to become part of the oppressive, tyrannical system. And in his dream, Sam must slay the evil samurai, who turns out to be Sam himself, in order to set Jill free and merge with her in the heavens.

All this suggests that within the movie’s symbolic layer, Jill represents Sam’s own idealized self, his deeply repressed conscience. (“Doesn’t it bother you, the things you do at Information Retrieval?” she asks.)

Ironically, the term "virtue signalling" is only ever used as a means of virtue signalling. It's not a substantive argument against anything, it's just a way for someone to flag their comment as being cool and edgy, not like those virtue signalling SJWs!

Oh, no, it's got nothing do with my own thoughts or actions. I'm a very empathic and gentle person, and I'm about as far from racist as a person can get -- come to my next family reunion, look around, then tell me I have a gently caress you, got mine/bigoted attitude. I'm only lamenting the fact that nobody can tell a joke anymore without somebody getting upset -- then vocalizing their displeasure -- then pressing that against someone so they don't tell jokes anymore.

"You don't understand the concept of empathy" is pretty much the dictionary definition of someone like that. The term "virtue-signaling" is very proper and accurate which, which is why people who virtue-signal don't want the term "virtue-signaling" used any more. You can't argue against an idea by claiming the idea can't be spoken of.

I have not looked at your post history, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess I'm not the first poster you've told not to use certain words.

From the article about Brooks: "I personally would never touch gas chambers or the death of children or Jews at the hands of the Nazis. Everything else is ok.” I would guess you disagree with this, and if I'm right, you don't understand the purpose or manufacture of humor.
