No you see, F is the 6th letter of the alphabet. If you subtract 6 from 45 (God-Emperor Trump), you get 39. There are 5 people in the photo so subtract that and you now have 34. 34 is 2*17 and the 17th letter is Q. Clearly this is a doubly important Q drop telling us something. Christmas trees? Being put into boxes? The only logical conclusion is that Hillary has already been executed for treason at Gitmo.

Because eyeballs on your stuff is all that matters in the social media world. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to hold attention long enough to get a like. Pay for a little bit of momentum and it might take off!

It's fun to watch actually decent photographers flame out, they stop doing what they love and start churning out whatever keeps the likes coming and they end up hating themselves.

They give away free promotion credits. I would never have promoted my stuff except out of curiosity because it was free with the credits. The result of you are curious was hundreds of likes and the majority of subs were gone in a number of days, mostly playing the sub to get subs game.

Other than that, there are plenty of delusional photographers out there who think they’re the poo poo. Similarly to music, and I see this very often, the narcissists are good at getting people to like their stuff who can’t tell the difference between good and bad and people with some amount of talent often think they could do better and are timid about promoting themselves, or are more concerned with creating stuff than promoting themselves. Social media with photography has really amplified that.

What does promoting on Instagram do? Does it just put your photos into people's feeds like an inline advertisement, like ads on Facebook's feeds? Put your photos into the Explore view or something?

I'm on a pretty old/neglected Instagram app so I haven't really noticed many instances of "promoted" stuff, unless they've gotten really good at making it unnoticeable.

Yeah essentially it puts photos in people’s feeds which the algorithm thinks matches their interests. I think it looks normal except for a little thing that says “promoted content” or something so it’s possible to miss it. I don’t see them all that often so it’d be easy to just scroll past one promo picture without realizing it. Other than exposure I think part of the utility is the analytics that accompany the promo because they give you detailed stats about so is being reached and all sorts of other info similar to what you’d see on YouTube analytics (which is my only point of reference).

Edit: thought some info on promotions in general might be interesting. When I got the credit it basically said on a photo that it was performing 90% better than the average and if I’d like to promote it they’d give me a 10 dollar credit which is good for 6 days worth of promotion. Ironically it was a cell phone snapshot of my cat talking about how she’d been sick, so I took off the promo early and applied the rest of the credits to a photo I cared more about and they both performed roughly equally. If anything it was interesting to see how it worked but with how people use Instagram I don’t see it really getting people any long term exposure from new followers unless you really always keep something promoted. I mean other than the likes but they don’t mean anything. Makes sense since there’s some small fraction of users who actually care about photography and don’t just use it as just another social media attention getting fix.

Also the comment about can’t wait for IG to die. It’s the only social media platform I use and I’ve grown to hate it recently, it’s literally an ad every 4th post for me.

I know this is the thread all about making GBS threads on praising great photographers, but I really hate to read this! As bad interesting as these self-promoted Instagram photographers are, that doesn't make self-promotion itself worthless, or something that only "good" photographers should do. Self-promotion can be as simple as just saying "look at this thing I made!" and I don't think anybody should be shamed for that. Shame them for their lovely cool photography, sure, but hating on someone for telling the world about their work? Seems unfair.

Plus I'm sure your stuff is just fine! No need to call it crap :unsmith:

Yeah, more eyeballs = better chance for paid work. But I work in a small niche of sports photography so it does me no good if ig shows my promoted posts to normal people.

I also get the ‘this photo is doing better than 90% of your posts’ message for every post. It’s meaningless :v:

They don't clearly define what "doing better" means? That with the private algorithm makes me wonder if it does anything at all or of its just a feel good thing.

Self-promotion goes against my very nature, but I can tell you from experience that if you ever want to sell your work you need to lay it on thick (Peter Lik being the apex example of this). Most people are utterly clueless as to what makes a particular photograph "good" and need you to reassure them that your work is amazing and you are amazing and they are making the right decision by buying your stuff.

I don't know poo poo about photography but I enjoy this thread and seeing folks with experience single out what makes a particular shot bad or good. Most times when people post an example it's obvious, but sometimes I legit require an explanation as to why a particular picture is bad.

...or good.

Make no mistake, I get that totally. You have to sell yourself and I understand that need. This guy that popped up in my feed wasn't selling anything, it was just some random dude who decided to promote his page for .. whatever reason .. but not business reasons as there was no contact info or any offer for work, etc.

When my wife and I are on vacation and we're done for the day I'll turn on wifi on the camera and connect her phone to it, have her rate any pictures she likes with stars.

She's good at avoiding the massive turds, but those middle ground ones I would otherwise never share she has an annoying tendency to really like while the artsy-fartsy ones I was excited about go ignored. It's crushing to experience that chasm but it's also probably a good reality check.. people don't give a poo poo about leading lines or blown highlights. They just react to drama, color, and sentimentality.
