Looks cute and fun and harmless. Which is a shame, because a Shaft reboot could have some real power right now if done straight. e: the more I think about it, the less harmless it seems. There's a real "this new PC young generation are pussies; they're not okay with violence, they won't hit women, and they avoid illegal activities" vibe throughout that seems like an awful message for our moment.

While they did say "lets do something different" I think the latter part of the article is more of the real explanation. With a three year old, you're only able to do so much on screen. There's a ton of obstacles - primarily in being able to effectively use young actors and that it can unintentionally come off comedic. So I think the 8 year old just gives them more flexibility for a fleshed out - and hopefully decently acted- character.

Upon watching the Pet Semetary trailer I'm more surprised they showed the achilles tendon scene............................................... . Granted you would not have to have seen the original, but for the uninitiated it's so disturbingly visceral that it'd be a great "didn't expect that" theater moment.

I'm not saying this new movie is trying to be the original wrt themes and events, etc., but that aspect lent heavily into stopping Chucky, both the horror and the urgency, as well as suspending disbelief as it's well established that exceedingly few mortal restrictions still apply to Charles Lee Ray.
