Apologies for the semi off-topic stuff here but I had never played a single KH game in my life and figured with the All-in-One pack it's time to finally check out all the rabble and how this is so popular everywhere.

I managed to get through KH 1.5 alright... kinda mediocre and clunky but I put that down to the age of the game so it's forgivable. But now I'm playing through Chain of Memories and I can say with confidence that I've never played a worse and less fun game in my life. Who thought this was a good idea?

I can imagine it being a little less stupid on the GBA in its original form, but this PS4 version is laughable. I mean, I fully admit I might be playing it like an idiot or something, but jesus christ. I don't think I've ever hated a game more. It's starting to sour me on the whole series and I can only hope I never have to see this card mechanic again for the rest of my life.

I'm currently on the fourth? Riku fight and he kills me in a single combo where I don't even get to do anything because I'm stunlocked constantly. Really well made game, totally fair and balanced.

Does anyone who somehow likes and enjoys this game (get your brain tumor checked out please) or has more of a clue about this have any tips or whatever? I've tried literally anything I could think of, including following guides and watching videos. I'm seriously at a loss and since I'm so close to the end I kinda don't wanna give up.

At this point tho it might be healthier to just move on, because I am getting legit angry at this game, the developers and really the whole franchise.

No the HD version of CoM is a terrible game, I have no advice for it, the GBA game was perfectly well designed, with being on a GBA in mind, the only thing, if this is carried over I can recommend is keep a lot of 0 cards, because they break and interrupt enemy attacks, so just wait on dumb combo's and break them. That, and try for Sleights.

Play Kingdom Hearts 2, that's about the point where the gameplay starts to get good.

Re:CoM hosed up all kinds of things regarding the balance of the game in transition. Incredibly basic sleights like Sonic Blade became completely overpowered. The game feels a lot more like a slog, battles are incredibly slow and rooms are so much larger with more enemies in them than on the GBA. Bosses now have ridiculously long wind-ups for their attacks that make it trivial to scroll over to a 0 card and cancel them out.

The original CoM had a strong sense of immediacy and fast pacing that made it easy to pick up and play and make significant progress. Re:CoM just turned it into a slog.

I also like the original CoM’s translation better

Well thanks for confirming I'm not insane. According to this walkthrough I was close to the end, but watching this YT video of all CoM cutscenes - there's still over half left (at least cutscene wise)! I really wanted to finish it, if only for the theme it unlocks when you finish a game in the All in One pack, but I really can't bring myself to deal with this game any more.

As I said, I never played the GBA version (or really any KH game) before, but I personally think the card system is godawful in the HD remake. You break a boss attack with a 0 card and usually the boss immediately breaks your 0 card with literally anything else before you can even get another attack off. Lots of the sleights (and even some of the companions or summons) are a 50/50 on if they hit or not, I assume thanks to the added dimension in the HD remake. The number of times my Omnislash has almost completely whiffed because the boss/enemy was an inch off the ground or something is infuriating, and that's just one example of many.

The game seemingly really didn't translate to 3d very well at all. And I can certainly agree with rooms being too large and fights (and as a result, the whole game) feeling like a massive slog. Maybe I'll come back after everything just to give it another shot but at this point I highly doubt it.

I beat this video game and it was pretty great. The final few hours are kind of a mess, there's so much stuff happening one after another and it's real hard to care because none of it gets any room to breath. But other than that it was a good game.

The combat was easy but it was cool and fun. Keyblade formchanging was rad, the team up attacks were cool, it was easy to ignore the attractions and magic has never felt better! Most of the like one-off level gimmicks were pretty well done as well. Swimming was cool, ship combat wasn't bad and I really enjoyed the Gigas. Even the minigames and various other distraction were alright all in all. And for the most part the story was silly and dumb in the KH way I enjoy.

Though I think the best part of the game was just having Sora, Donald and Goofy as the party again. They give off a good vibe of dumb friends frequently dunking on each other that the games after KH2 didn't really capture. I really enjoyed my time with it! Can't wait for KH4 in another 13 years!!

This is the first Kingdom Hearts game where I actually used magic frequently. In KH1 & 2 fire/blizz/thunder etc. hit with the force of a wet fart but this time lobbing Firagas and Aerogas just utterly devastates enemies and I love it. The Ever After formchange is a room-cleaner too, it's so ridiculously powerful.

Sorry if this is a really dumb question but what do you mean by "the way it was intended"? I'd figure the way it was intended to be enjoyed is after playing all the other games so you know what's going on? (I realize this is a ridiculous sentence because who even knows wtf is going on in KH regardless of which games they played)

e: I'm also currently watching this cutscene movie they made 358/2 into and I'm really not sure if it's clearing anything up or if it's just confusing me more, but at least I can just let that run on the side while doing whatever.

The older games don’t play that well and it’s a long road, I’d say if you enjoy kingdom hearts 3 go back and play the others or just listen and watch a bunch of explainer videos and podcasts to get the rest. It’s convoluted as hell and what it comes down to most is friendship conquers all.

Don’t listen to them, KHII final mix still holds up extremely well. BBS is also an enjoyable experience once you get the hang of it (use a guide for command melding to save your sanity). Dream Drop Distance can be enjoyable, if you can get over some of its flaws.

the only bad thing KH2FM did was lock movement/block abilities behind form levelling, but there are enough places to quickly grind those up that it's not a HUGE deal.

BBS is one of my favourite ones in the series and I'm glad that they kept the form changes from it. I liked command decks too, but they were probably never going to keep that for a main game and what they did in 3 was fun too. I feel like people didn't like the weird board game in it either, but I liked it as a fun little diversion every now and then

Taking away Dodge Roll as a default move was also a mistake in my opinion (though fortunately Final Mix gave it back to you eventually and they never messed with it again afterwards).

So I beat the game and now I think I know why all the Disney worlds seem off in this game. They put 98% of the story at the end of the game. They just pushed through each Disney world to get to the non stop cutscenes for the ending. The Disney stories went so fast on some worlds Sora couldn't even catch up! The main character of the entire series couldn't even follow it.

And I can't help but think if you don't know the backstory you would be going, "Ok these are all the bad guys together", "ok that's a new person I guess hes here now", "here's another person I have no idea who they are", "ok now this new one is just some glowing old guy". I have no idea how they could explain all the poo poo to people.

The absence of final fantasy characters seems really really strange like it does in the games since BBS but really they were good contrast to the Disney characters in kh1/2. The KH cast does have enough of its own characters but again that doesn't really happen until the game is over.

Maybe future games will be better?

I would say I enjoyed it not because how pretty all the graphics are or its story but the combat and mini games are still decently fun.

also it's nice that Sora doesn't just immediately become the center of the plot on every world when he shows up. I like that things happen and he only gets to see what he's there for--for example, he didn't need to know anything about Anna's trip to the trolls or anything like that and it would have made zero sense for him to. He's not omniscient--sometimes you only get to see a small part of the story.
