I'm not saying they all need to be that good. Just that he is clearly the best free kick ever so much so Pirlo said in his autobiography he copied how he did it. I don't think I ever see anyone try a lot of the kinds of free kicks he does in this video

Who's the best free kick taker nowadays anyway? I honestly can't think of one in Serie A that I would even put on the same level as Pirlo, Mihajlovic, Juninho, Beckham, etc. Pjanic maybe?

I'm not saying that it's more or less successful than traditional top corner free kicks, just that you look a lot less stupid when it fails. See also: fancy penalties, goalkeepers attempting to play the ball.

Semi related, but last night as I watched my team blast another corner at knee hight into the first defender, I was wondering which player takes the best corner kicks. And if there actually is one that is crazy consistent about them. Because it seems like that's something that you could easily practice yet pro players gently caress it up all the time.

Matt Grimes puts a free kick right into the top corner practically every game but they all get saved because idk there's no "movement on the ball" or something. Like penalties it's as much about deceiving the keeper as putting it in the right place if you want to score regularly.

This is absolutely true, you can watch training videos of the worst cloggers on your team putting free kicks over the metal training dummies and in to the corner but every keeper knows that's all they can do. You know who I forgot about that could put it anywhere was Nakamura. Made Celtic worth watching. Reggina's insane owners wasted an absurd talent with that one.

After a certain point, all the curve in the world doesn't matter if it doesn't have pace. It's easier to generate curve over a wall than pace, and that's why the majority of free kicks get blasted over the bar. Anecdotally, mid-air movement for me was really only important if it was a folha seca/knuckleball. Keepers can read where a curved ball is heading based on where it's coming over the wall and if it's an in swinging kicker or out swinging kicker. I shamelessly copied Juninho as much as possible. The guy was the greatest free kick taker of his generation, maybe even the best ever.
