The first Call of Duty expressly tells you not to try and open closed doors, hoo boy how that game shaped the environment of fps games for like 10 years.

Also it feels like these early games had better sound design or maybe it's poorer sound mixing and everything is just equal amounts of loud.

Feel like that was a big part of why it left such a big impression on me. The first mission starts out real quiet and then that window with the MG42 opens up and it feels like all hell breaks loose. The loudness of the gunfights gave the battles an intensity that you didn't see much in FPSs previously.

Finally finished Valkyria Chronicles 4; I actually had been more or less finished already since I had wrapped up the Two Valkyria DLC and was just sitting in a cutscene. 77 hours, finished most content except for the Expert Skirmishes and a few of the post-game ones that don't unlock new characters.

I like the game quite a lot in that it probably represents the best overall combination of map design and mechanics; in terms of new units over the original game it's the first time where it's felt truly right with regards to Grenadiers. I had a lot of fun taking advantage of them, even though their interception fire usually sucked (both when it was your own and from enemies).

The plot is suuuuuuuper whatever. When you go into that game, pretty much every preconception you might have beforehand will ultimately play out exactly as you imagine it will. No imagination whatsoever. But that said, for the most part the cast isn't terrible outside of Raz, and even he has his moments.

The whole Anthem demo situation is really fascinating to me.

The fact that they were showing off a bunch of the game before launch and had a public demo weekend suggested that BioWare was pretty confident in Anthem. If they weren't, I think they'd have been a lot more guarded in what they let people see and play before the game came out. But they weren't--they clearly thought it was going to go over better than it did.

Then the demo itself hit and was a technical disaster and showed off a really boring section of the game. A lot of people, very rationally, came away from it feeling like the game was set to be an absolute disaster.

But now that it's out in early access, it's... good. The performance is night and day from the demo. The controls are massively improved. So far the story and missions are pretty good, too. It's like they precisely calculated the worst possible demo to show off and that's what they put out there for those weekends. There are bugs and a few server issues but that's not exactly unique to Anthem's launch, and there's another big patch planned for the "real" launch day on the 22nd that will hopefully clear up at least some of those.

It's obviously way too early to tell but I wouldn't be surprised if the demo weekends ended up being a serious mistake in retrospect. I think a lot of people I've seen posting (here and on other sites) came away from the demo having totally written the game off, and I can't really blame them. And now that the game costs money to play, there's no way they're earning most of those players back. What I wonder is how many of the people turned off by the demo might have bought the game and enjoyed it if the demo hadn't been such a trainwreck.

(At the same time, I also think it wouldn't have been the end of the world if the game got a few more months' worth of dev time before being launched...)

The biggest issue is that the missions in the demo were loving boring. Does the main game have anything new or more exciting, or is it like Destiny where it's a barely disguised loot treadmill and you just put up with it for colors?

Resident Evil 2 Remake kicked outstanding amounts of rear end, Apex Predator turned out to be a fantastic Battle Royale game nobody asked for or expected, Catherine showed up for PC, Anthem isn't a complete trainwreck and Yakuza Kiwami is out on PC tommorow. 2019... Good?!

It is literally just EA telling Bioware to make a Destiny clone because Destiny was raking in big bucks when dev work on this started.

I mean I just started so I can't really comment on the whole scope of the game's missions. The early ones definitely have more flair and interesting things going on than the demo ones, though. The vibe I got from the demo missions was that they were basically side quest-tier missions which, if that's the case, was a hilariously bad idea.

Like I just can't overstate how much of a misfire that demo was on BioWare's part. It's like it was precisely calculated to show off the game as poorly as possible.

It's certainly not a revolutionary or truly great game but I don't think the devs were bullshitting when they stressed how much the launch version would improve on the demo, and it's to the point that I'm not sure why they did the demo at all.

Frankly it has more in common with Warframe than Destiny, right down to mech suits, builds that let you stack modifiers on a bunch of gear pieces up for crazy effects, and an endgame that looks more like a Diablo-style random loot treadmill than Destiny's raiding-focused endgame. So I guess if BioWare was under orders to make a Destiny clone they hosed up right from the start.

Real talk Netflix has created a little animation renaissance these past few years because they can afford to throw money at a couple episodes of something that couldn't be marketable on TV. Like I didn't think anyone would care about an adaption of Luke Pearson's Hilda comics but drat that cartoon was better than the source material and Rilakkuma is going to kill me with cute overload.

What if Carmen Sandiego is a thief who only steals from other thieves and returns artifacts to their rightful countries

I also appreciate that Zack and Ivy, who were the ACME detectives in an older animated series, are her sidekicks in this reimagining

Edit: Also I believe Carmen Sandiego uses a katana at one point

I was worried it was going to be a generic hero series, but after the first two episodes they start laying on the historic and geographical facts and it becomes the show, you know and love. The chief is still black although not voiced by Carl tart, unfortunately.

Secret best part was the old intro music used as elevator musak.
