I mean, art influences politics. Interracial relationships in America were normalized partly because of some prominent examples of them on TV. And public opinion polling on gay marriage has trended more positively pretty much concurrently with movies not going out of their way to be lovely to gay people. The public is made more aware of something by mass media, the public influences politicians.

the FDA was famously formed as a direct consequence of a guy writing a novel where a meatpacking plant worker falls into a rendering vat and gets incorporated into food products

the writer was actually making a wider critique of contemporary capitalist society but that was the part of the book that people remembered

In my opinion (as someone who has kept up to last year's Yoimonogatari), the anime has covered most of what's been published fairly well. Kizumonogatari does feel somewhat less miserable as a movie series, though. The novels are a fun read all the same either way, and are probably recommended if the series has gotten your attention enough but has left you feeling curious.

I mean there's series where more lovely stuff happens, but I think Welcome to the NHK has the factor of being potentially more relatable to people's real lives, especially if you consider the author. I know of at least one friend it's triggered suicidal thoughts in.
