With regards to the dragster death, if an accident happens off public roads, the traffic act does not apply and it then comes to negligence legislation which is a lot less specific and a lot of the police are out of their depth when they don't have the very prescriptive traffic or criminal acts to follow.

With regards to automation in mines, a lot of the driver jobs are going for sure but maintenance and logistics are not going away in great numbers - especially isolated site based stuff. Jobs like coding, law, accountancy, medicine, etc will be following drafting in the next big rounds of automation.

But but coding is the future?

What percentage of jobs will be lost to automation? I had heard a fairly high percentage, like over 50% on most sites, but not in enough detail and I don't have a link.

Good question, in blast, dig, truck, rail and ship operations like simple coal and iron ore mines (those not underground or requiring washing / benefaction / processing) it might be the numbers you talk about - in those the machine operators are a big chunk of the workforce although already much reduced from 20 years ago due to dramatic equipment up-sizeing that has happened.

For underground and processing plants, there is not huge scope for further reductions as Aussie mines are already extensively mechanised. Further reductions in site staff is generally office workers but even there that has already happened a lot.

E) for underground - further automation can tend to increase labour required due to the tricky maintenance requirements of the automation systems relative to the old days of just putting a guy on a machine and letting him hero dig out the stope under unsupported ground.

Lol the other day Morrison claimed money for Queensland flooding is now going to Christmas island because he has to reopen it. He's such a piece of poo poo

quote:

After inspecting Queensland cattle farms ravaged by severe floods and winds, Mr Morrison fumed about having to spend $1.4 billion over the next four years reopening the mothballed centre on Christmas Island.

"The fact that I have to do it now because the parliament made a stupid decision makes me pretty angry," he told reporters.

"I want to invest that money here, not on a detention centre that I now have to open because of people who made a very bad decision."

Yeah, it's more nuanced than the simple comparison I was making. (sorry for the delayed response, I just had a fat wasp wander into the house which suddenly got 100% of my attention!). Then having a look at stuff like this.

Do you think it's realistic to expect existing mine workers to upskill to the newer maintenance and tech oversight roles or is it a generational change due to the specialties involved?

Do you think there's enough of a boom in battery metals like lithium, nickel and cobalt to fill the jobs role that coal currently offers?

I can't speak to other fields but while simpler legal transactions can probably be automated (and some already are! I suppose that's what a self-checkout is) a very large part of law is about foreseeing and mitigating risk or strategising the best strategy to achieve an outcome and that's not gonna be automated any time soon.

I hadn’t thought of single touch payroll being a solution to the robo debt stuff but it’d probably be pretty effective. What it will do is gently caress up all the dickheads who pay themselves a wage only after the business tax is sorted and know how much they need to pay themselves so them and their wife (aka “business consultant”) are just under $37k or whatever.

The accidental death of any 8 year old is a tragedy but beyond tightening up safety regulations any further action is knee jerk bullshit. Partly because it singles out this single incident when there are an enormous cohort of young people taking much greater risks in other areas.

Alternatively, it's very responsible reporting because I doubt the owners of these buildings would have told the tenants what danger they're in.

But the local council chief executive David Price says the tiny island is not ready to take asylum seekers with complex medical needs.

"If a person has a compound fracture they're air-vacced out. There's no operations done (here)," Mr Price told ABC Radio in Perth on Wednesday.

"Some of these people would have serious mental problems that need to be dealt with by specialists. We haven't got the specialists here to do that.

"We just wouldn't have the capacity to deal with people coming here for medical reasons, both physically and mentally."

He said it would make more sense to transfer the patients to mainland Australia in the first place.

Asked if the government gave the council any warning about the decision, Mr Price replied: "No, no, no, absolutely not."

He dubbed it a "political knee-jerk reaction" following the government's defeat in parliament over the 'Medevac' bill.
It doesn't even have the services to care for a broken limb. Pretty sure one of the refugees died due to an untreated broken limb becoming infected so that's fantastic.
Although according to that map it is around the corner from a place called the Lucky Ho so it does have that going for it.
