That weird HDR colour effect is from over-aggressive tone mapping. If you just do 'straight HDR" where you are mostly just dealing with contrast and shadows vs lights, it looks ok. You just need to watch out for haloes around areas of high contrast. Just because those other sliders exist, doesn't mean that you have to abuse them.

Yeah that would be my jam too, but as you say difficult to get access to good vantage points. Something very eerie about empty tower block offices at night though.
