Was RPM the last series that said "gently caress it, we're doing whatever we want"? Yeah RPM was the last Disney season so they really went all out and then burned through all their budget real quick but it’s real fuckin good

I dimly recall something said about how they insisted Samurai use every bit of Sentai footage as possible to save costs, which is probably the reason it's not, ah, well-regarded.

That sadly wasn't the problem

The problem was a one two punch of them rushing the production of the show to the point where they couldn't write their own scripts early on, and even when they could they had a show runner who felt that the best way to handle adaptation was to be as literal as possible

That's very depressing. I remember seeing an interview with Gia's actress and thinking, 'hey, she's pretty charming.' If only she's gotten to show it in the actual series.

The people who hit the escape pods on Megaforce made it pretty clear that Saban is more hands-on with those seasons than he was in the show's first go-round. It would explain why each of them is trying to channel some aspect of non-Sentai-footage MMPR in some way: THIS must be what made me rich!

Dino Charge seems pretty well liked, I figure he must have thought "well, dinosaurs" and didn't insist on Two School Bullies Who Make Pratfall Comedy or Hey I Know Let's Make One Ranger Dance or Let's Build The Most 90s Juice Bar Set.

I love ninja steel because it's so loving crazy.

The two bullies are the dumbest most codependent human beings alive and give 1000%, one of the rangers is a country music Superstar who gives it up to go to their high school, and also the red rangers secret brother. He only became a country music Superstar because he lost his memory, and got his memory back by being electrocuted by a fake robot clone brother. They're mentor takes whatever the problem is and expresses it in terms of being a dick to show them how they are loving up. Everything is fast and loose.

I just don't it a lot of fun and am very surprised how hated it is.

The pink ranger invents a boomerang arrow by just loving bending an arrow and then the overachieving bully tries it by tying an arrow in a knot, and it brings him a beehive. He wins a tennis match by using a realistic robot arm.

"OH REALLY? "

I really, really hope Beast Morphers doesn’t have a missing dad subplot. That is so tired. Apparently Red’s dad is the mayor of the city where Beast Morphers takes place, so that’s cool and kinda gives me RPM vibes but I am sick of daddy issues that go nowhere.

Like if James apologizing to Tyler had actually gone anywhere or if Brody’s dad showing back up wasn’t so anticlimactic I might feel differently. For that matter making Brody a former slave and him having 0 angst or feelings about it is super weird. Obviously you can’t go too far with it because kid’s show, but...why is that his backstory in the first place if you’re not gonna make it mean anything within the narrative and not gonna have him feel any particular way about it?

I love Dino Charge, though. It is good and fun and I love that cast. And there are individual episodes of MegaForce I really enjoy. Hard agree on Gia’s actress being super charming. Same with Jake’s actor as well.

Yes but in GoBusters it carries weight. It means something. The team has feelings and conflicted emotions about it. In Dino Charge and Ninja Steel it was super poorly implemented. In Dino Charge James gives a cockamamie excuse for being missing for so many years, apologizes to Tyler, Tyler says “It’s ok, Dad!” and it’s never discussed again.

Power Rangers tends to struggle with plots involving parents in general. Remember how Hunter and Blake were initially driven by their parents' deaths and avenging them, but once they find out that Sensei Watanabe wasn't responsible, they chill out and don't go after Lothor with the same kind of viciousness they were smacking the Wind Ninjas around with?

I watched most of the first half of Ninja Steel, but “I invented a machine that makes tasty food out of any old sludge, world hunger is solved” is an actual plot line and that makes “the kids raise signatures to clean up Angel Grove Junkyard” seem passé.

The Halloween episode is amazingly great in the amateur-localization way. It’s all the best early MMPR tropes played straight. Possibly the best “so corny it’s awesome” episode since the one where the DinoThunder kids watched the source material.

Parents in power rangers is hard because unlike Sentai they have a life outside of being a ranger and how do they fully express that in 20 minute episodes and cram all the other poo poo in. It works best when they're sorts disconnected from the outside world.

Go-Busters, by contrast, had an episode where they finally found their parents only to discover they’d been dead the whole time, and Red Buster had to destroy the computers holding their digital memories, which he did while crying. Pretty similar theme but it’s really interesting how the two shows approached it differently.

That's because a major part of PR is aping a lot of plots from kids shows and folding them around the PR framework with generally mixed results.

If Sentai wants to make a story about family, they make the whole team a family. Power Rangers won’t do this because, at the risk of sounding like a dickbag, the diversity tokenism of the early seasons has paid off today with one of the more diverse fandoms in superhero media. Power Rangers will never have it’s own Wakanda, but everything I’ve heard from comic store workers is that the Boom comic sells more to minorities than most single Big Two properties do.

So we’re never going to have an Incredibles Family season like GoGo-V or Magiranger. The closest we’ve gotten is siblings.

They could honestly go back to square one and just "Recruit 5 teenagers" from different backgrounds because they need to unite the planet against a common threat. The latest Power Rangers movie did a pretty decent job as doing just that. They started with your typical red ranger jock and pink ranger pretty girl, then branched out to a gay Latino, an autistic black guy, and uh..I guess Zack was there and had a little backstory.

The big twists were the jock accepting Billy as his best friend and the Cheerleader being the target of revenge porn/bullying but it made a pretty alright movie despite how bad most of the CG was.

It's really not worth it, because for all it's absurdist plots it's all played far too straight faced. And the stuff that isn't straight faced is too ridiculous even for this show (at one point, guys fart to fly around.) There's one genuinely so-bad-it's-good episode that felt like it actually captured the campy spirit of MMPR for all the right reasons instead of the wrong ones, and if you want to see that someone shaved it into this 3 minute YouTube video.

The part where a cast member long-timer got recognized with being a ranger for one fight is kind of cool but otherwise it's a lousy season.

Well, the Go-Busters were basically a family and they weren't related at all. They didn't have exactly the same diversity concerns but the show did a lot with how they all had different backgrounds and upbringings informing their Ranger status (part of which was their huge age gaps).
