Question about Anthem:

Probably my absolute least favorite thing in video games is inventory crafting hoarding where you need a CPA license and a zillion years experience with Excel (think Monster Hunter World and ____ Souls)

Is Anthem like those games, mildly similar (like Dead Space and Prey), or completely straightforward shooter like Halo?

Every review I've watched talks about upgrading your gear but doesn't mention if it's the kind of thing you just pick up or it's hours of grinding for rare elements to use in a crafting system.

TIA.

Well it's definitely not a straightforward shooter like Halo.

Twilight Town's bad but I think the worst is probably the second to last chapter (I think second to last) where it's just a lot of padding for seemingly no real reason

Gear isn't super complicated from what I've seen but there's definitely crafting and grinding, it's not halo-esque at all.

there's something you have to do in each "world" to get to the secret world

mines: bring the key to the locked chest (they'll be in the same level) to get the eye

jungle: find the entrance to the black market using the eye. get the ankh from the black market

ice cave: die in the level with the moai head and be resurrected using the ankh to get the Special Boy Hat

temple: get the sceptre from anubis and use it to open the door to the city of gold. also you need the special boy hat to get in. get the book of the dead from the city of gold

boss: find where the door to the secret world is using the book of the dead. bomb down to it or get olmec to destroy a path down to it. ride olmec's head as it sinks in the lava and enter the door

I thinks thats fair. It feels like a game thats two-three levels too long. It also drag awfully if youre grinding out secrets, which you have too much impetus to do compared to Doom1-3

Thimbleweed Park is a great example of how LucasArts worked so well due to the team dynamic. Without a funny writer like Tim Schafer or great scenario designer like Dave Grossman the game ends up being a meandering list of fetch quests and disjointed puzzles that culminates in an astoundingly bad ending. There are a lot of clever bits but no glue to hold it together so I can't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a deep pedigree of point-and-click games.

e: Man, the ending is set up in such a cool way like MGS1 "check the back of the CD case" cool then it immediately shits all over itself.

The game is setup like Twin Peaks/X-Files with two FBI agents, who are established as very suspicious themselves, investigating a murder tied to a small town's industrial magnate who is also dead. A bunch of other weird characters and plot threads are introduced, and the entire game you're being stalked/spied on by something horrifically sinister but it's all revealed in the end you're playing a video game that constantly loops itself back to the beginning. All the main characters literally rush their personal endings to a conclusion which gives them closure and "saves" them from the game. You have to solve a seemingly impossible puzzle, the solution is in the original Kickstarter trailer, which brings you to the game's prototype which is literally drawn in paint and filled with temp assets. You shut down the game and... black screen. The end.

I think TF2's story is about as much as you can expect from a comical FPS. I genuinely enjoyed all the different lines each class had for murdering each other. The overarching metanarrative they created to tie everything together is an idiotic mess but I think that was the point. Its a pointless nest of self-defeating actions orchestrated by a shadowy corporation to justify building more guns to use against itself.
