qhat posted:I think RSUs are withheld from me upon vesting to cover income taxes, so I don't think there's a huge tax problem for me unless I sell at a date that is later than "immediately". they get withheld yes but keep in mind that it can also mean that your actual paychecks are under withheld for your years earnings. my rsu income is what put me in the gently caress you bracket this year. just look up the formulas and double check that you'll have enough held aside. it might be different if you're based in Canada for this job too though.

salary chat - i didnt really get into the software industry until uhh 5 years ago or so. worked a variety of lovely low-paying jobs in my 20s in computer-toucher-y fields topping out around, idk, 45k-50k/yr? my first software job was sdet at 60k, got a 20k raise after my first year, got another 20k raise the next year. company went out of business and i'm now fully remote out of a sf startup at 130k + options.

i got hosed in a way only oracle could gently caress someone with my first job out of school and it cemented my salary much lower than it should have been and it took me.... 5ish years to claw my way out of that hole. i'm still underpaid but at least i'm at the bottom of my salary band rather than being totally screwed

I went from 40 to 60 to 75 to 90 to 150 in a span of 12 years. The 150 I am currently at has a up to 10% bonus at the end of the year as well (got 8.5 this year.)

I worked my rear end off for the switch to dev (Eschaton and others basically life coached me through it, lol). I guess since everyone else shared: as of my last review cycle I got a raise to 137k salary and I received a 20k bonus and 80k rsu refresh. I still have 3/4 of the 105k in rsus I got at sign on unvested also. so like bsd says I'm doing fine for where I'm at in my career, just only the rich ppl were posting numbers and my situation is extra stressful since I spend so much servicing debt from my poverty life and on medical care.

for some international perspective: i'm in stockholm, sweden, making about $63k (USD) before taxes (slightly over 30%). six-ish years of experience, no degree. peanuts by us standards, above 90th percentile here. think roughly $120-130k to equate it to a similar income bracket in the us. no stock or anything, but a deece pension contribution, 6 weeks of paid vacation, unlimited paid sick time, and of course free healthcare and education as well as heavily subsidized prescription drugs (and literal years of parental leave if i ever start a family). i am slightly underpaid though, i had another offer that would have paid 10% better but it was adtech and seemed way more stressful than my current job. very happy where i am.

coming up on 7 years in the industry, my progression went from something like 60k -> 70k at my first job (really hosed myself in negotiating) 100k -> 130k at my second job 185k + bonus + 125k RSUs (actually 500k over 4 years) at my current job honestly i'm not even that smart or good with anything special but i did know how to prepare for interviews the last time around also that 60k was at least comfortable enough to live in brooklyn, so i agree with nbsd at least about MOST places (yes 55k won't let you live in the west village but you can enjoy NYC just fine). software devs should remind themselves of the median income of where they live every now and then

I’ve been touching computers professionally for 5 years. 80k -> 115k first job; got a bonus that was iirc 16k after taxes when the product sold 135k -> 156k and I’d be up for a raise if I weren’t leaving second job. ended up with mid-5-figgies combined cash (from selling options) and bought options, but it’s pre-IPO so who knows what’ll happen there newjob is 153k base + bonus + 260k in RSUs over 4 years

real talk if I’m making the same as #1 cs department postgrads as a humanities phd haver with just a freakin’ minor in CS and five years of experience (only 2 of that as a security professional), that makes me feel pretty dang good about myself shame about the 7 years of figgies I missed out on getting the phd but on balance I think the phd was better for me

CS at UT, which was like top 15 when I was there, was a lot of very hard things about advanced statistics, dynamic programming, operating systems, memory management, esoteric data structures, and specialized programming techniques that not a single person I've interviewed with has given one iota of a poo poo about School was so much harder than having a job lol

Usually when you've got some bug that is stumping everyone else in the office and you remember a random piece of information from Computer Butts 302 back in 2009 and you look like a genius because of it.

i dropped out of state school and only finished up a BS online (WGU) for the HR screen. still working out ok. new gig does 100% tuition reimbursement for grad school though (taxable income after $5250/year lol) so that's an option if i want to dick wave on my resume.

I don't have a degree, but at my first gig, my boss handed me “C++ Primer Plus” and told me if I read it and completed all of the exercises in the book he would mentor me. I did complete the book and he held up his end of the bargain. Then I read through ”The Linux Programming Interface” which also helped me a great deal. I know it's not formal education, but I don't think my career has been held back either.

My most memorable classes from college were the non-CS ones, with maybe Theory of Computation being the exception. Most of the professors I had for every class were great people, I just don't readily remember the time spent in those classes.
