like you said you'd recruit people at their concerts. i was like "wowww holy poo poo that makes sense." it's hard to describe. the mentality is like you're an enlightened being floating effortlessly above and through the sea of normies. like that video. it's messianic. doesn't necessarily have anything to do with a specific kind of politics as much as the psychology behind it. and it's also highly personally expressive. there's not much a strategy to winning power where you go from A to Z and build a mass movement. i wouldn't say the left is doing everything perfectly today (what do i know anyways?) but it seems optimistic with institution building, structure, people trying out various strategies but thinking about how to win power. i know when i've heard workshopping around experienced DSA people for instance they always ask "how does this help us build power?" in those exact terms. now there's this enormous machine gearing up around bernie. maybe there's a mass base forming out of that. not leading to (y'know) glorious communist heaven in the sky but something positive nevertheless.
