I completely gave up on Udemy after buying a couple courses where someone with an indecipherable accent had paid a native english speaker to record the promo videos. I've had a pluralsight sub for a few months now and Udemy isn't nearly on this level.

Udemy is ok for some of the basics (at least for me) and serves as a bit of springboard for other stuff. Agreed that they have LOTS of pirated material there but there are legit ones as well. Definateley buyer beware.

The Pluralsite subscription price can be hard to swallow but there's a reason you pay a premium.

I was slightly tempted to shell out thousands for the official Red Hat Certified System Administrator and Red Hat Certified Engineer training course. It's any where from a few to several grand but I've continuously heard great things. You've got the live lab and good instructor if you get stuck or have questions.

I wonder if that would tax deductible.

It's a deductible business expense if you're a self-employed business owner (i.e. 1099 contractor) and you already work in systems engineering or with Linux.

Only do the training if your work pays for it or if it’s tax deductible. Or if you have boat money and don’t care.

Do people not use them anymore?

My previous job with an open office definitely used white noise and it worked great. I don’t think my place is an open office, we all have basically 5ft tall cubes and it’s usually extremely quiet(when I’m not on the phone with my extremely loud and stimulating “phone voice”). We just have a small area with hardwood floors so sound carries.

I once flew cross country to do a software install at a secure site. I show up, reception and security process me and I sit in a blank 4 wall room with only a table and chair. No sever rack, server, laptop, nothing. About 45 minutes later someone tells me what they're still waiting for the hardware vendor to deliver the server I'm installing things on. "UPS says it should be here tomorrow or next".

So basically the US gov paid my employer about 1500 a day for me to sit in my room and watch TV for two days.

I have an opportunity to maybe move into QA at the company I'm currently at. I currently do something sort of 'QA Adjacent' which involves UAT testing. Are there any good online resources for QA Testing that I can begin going through to improve my chances of getting this job? I'm learning a lot of the terms used within QA, but I don't know where to start after that.

I have to make an extremely tough decision by end of day tomorrow and I cant figure it out.

Option 1 is to stay here as a consultant and get converted to FTE in a few months. Pros are the consultant income is 70k higher than option 2. Cons are long commute and probably a 30% income hit when they force my FTE conversion.

Option 2 is to take the opportunity to go back to my old company for a lower base income than option 1 but running/growing the CISO as a service/security offering and taking 5% GP on all sales from that service in addition to 2% on non-CISO referrals from existing accounts. Pros are it has unlimited income potential and mostly work from home and free convention attendance. Cons are if I suck at sales I'll be taking an income hit and I lose my side business income I get from this company.

The external opinion of me is I'm actually good at sales so maybe I'm just being scared of the unknown. But historically when I make a leap of faith it has worked out for me. Ugh

What's your marginal tax rate? Between 2 hours of your time lost per day travelling that costs money and is time you could be doing your side hustle and your tax bracket , and that you know it has a finite lifespan. I would suggest the first option doesn't actually make you as much more money that you think

35% and yea that is something I've considered as well. Between forced furlough, unpaid holidays, and transit costs it doesnt end up being such a large discrepancy. I do get 20% of my self-employed income untaxed under trump though.

I agree with this point of view. Also, cutting rates by 10% across the board seems like a bad sign for the company. And the people who are going to stay are probably the ones who are stuck. Do you really want to continue working with the crappiest employees/contractors?

Look into college classes if you have time. They often have the same training material, and spread out over 6-12 weeks you can get more face time with the instructor. Networking with other students is also valuable. The full time, week long courses that cost $5k are aimed at employers who reimburse their employees and pay for them to get the training.

In a single o365 tenant, can you have exchange account data living in different data centers? I feel like that answer has always been no. I feel like its been a required to have a separate tenant if you have requirements of inboxes in different data centers. GDPR, etc.

drat, I have a coworker that bullshits clients quite bit when said coworker doesn't have an answer. It's not my problem but it did get me thinking. Is it really acceptable to outright BS clients with full on nonsense explanations? My philosophy is be honest, avoid jargon where possible and keep it concise. This hasn't steered me wrong yet. I think BSing is risky because of the risk of being called out eventually.

My coworker's solution though for a difficult issue he doesn't have an answer for: "It's due to an enforced firewall and antiviral polices as well as a lack of implementation of a virtualized platform."

Now my guess is it's simply an issue with the user profiles. But yeah bud virtualization is good!!! It's entertainment for me :munch: as long as it doesn't affect myself or my other coworkers be interesting to see what's next.

Start-up got bought by a big place many moons ago. We're working on a hot open source data processing framework that's being used by our new overlords. Parallel to that, we have two teams working on projects meant to productize said framework and earn the company an income. Our CEO was making promises about "nothing changing" and said overlord being perfectly fine (no, enthusiastic!) with us building a product on a competitors' cloud.

A few weeks after the sale, it was suddenly made clear we would all "receive new offers" to be "moved to the new corporate entity". Our teams would be merged into Overlord's respectable departments. Moreover, Overlord already has mildly similar products than what our team has been working on. There's been a few weeks with meetings about "product alignment", but no actual timeline, progress or conclusions.

I'm starting to believe our place was bought purely for the core framework devs, and that our other teams will go the same way the Travis CI acquisition went. Part of me wants to sit this one out to see where it goes, part of me is anxious about the future. Glad I got this off my chest.

I'm guessing these clients are either small business types with no technical knowledge, or non-technical coworkers?

I had a consultant try to bullshit his way through an answer they obviously didn't know, and I knew "enough" of the correct answer to know he had no clue wtf he was talking about. When I confronted him on it instead of owning that he didn't know he double downed on the lie. We didn't work with that company again.

You're right on with being honest, and if you don't know something, own that you don't know it but make it your responsibility to find out (even if that's just finding someone who does know). When in doubt "I don't know the answer to that, but I will find out for you".

Yeah, that dude is real dumb and he's going to cause more problems than whatever problem he thinks he's avoiding. No one in the business world expects everyone to know everything, not even consultants. A "I need to research further" is fine. Also fine - "need to review with my team to confirm our best practices blah blah blah."
