Yeah I'm pretty sure people have been caught out in the past for ending quali with too little fuel.

You must make it back to pit/parq ferme, and there must be a certain amount of fuel left in the tank at any time for the FIA to test it. If you fail to do either, the time doesn't count.

the team we know now as Mercedes can trace its lineage all the way back to Tyrrell.

Tyrrell sold to British American Tobacco to form BAR, which partnered with (and then got bought out by) Honda, who abandoned ship to Ross Brawn for one shining moment before Mercedes decided to jump back in as a works team from 2010.
