A pair of Florida children were found wandering along the emergency lane of Interstate 10, but were reportedly well protected by a couple of dogs.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office posted to its Facebook page the story of a boy and girl, both under the age of 6, that were found near Holt, which is east of Pensacola.

The sheriff’s office and Florida Highway Patrol were called to Mile Marker 44 of I-10 on Saturday morning after getting several 911 calls about the children. On scene were several Good Samaritans who had stopped to look after the children until police arrived. The post said witnesses reported that two dogs accompanying the children would herd the children back against the guardrail when they moved toward the highway.

The post said the dogs were Great Pyrenees-shepherd mixes.

The post said the children had wandered away from their home, with the girl of the duo “trying to chase a rainbow.”

A foster dad at the home had called after them to return, but was not able to chase after them because of a mobility issue, but did send his teenage children to search for them while he drove into the woods in a tractor also searching for them. An investigation determined the foster dad “made a diligent effort to locate the children and provide for their welfare, so no criminal charges were pursued,” according to the post.

One commenter named Tim Sirois on the post wrote, "My brother and I were first on scene. The dogs involved were amazing. Never let anyone say God don't use us when we least expect it to do his work." to which the sheriff's office responded "Thank you so much for your quick action and compassion. This could have had a much different outcome if not for people like you."
