They involve the attorney on the case and keep them informed. It doesn't mean the attorney knows every single name as it happens. The cops need to make identifications and get their ducks in a row first.

State attorneys become involved at some point in an investigation, however they are responsible for the prosecution side of things. Police are the ones investigating the crimes. At this early of a stage, they’re the ones with all of the information, and even then it’s going to be scattered among a bunch of officers and not necessarily consolidated.
