Even when USAID is carrying actual food it's just an excuse to go around recruiting death squads.

Welp I was thinking otherwise but I’m totally convinced now, the guy who once used humanitarian aid as a cover to fund fascist, nun-raping death squads to destabilize a government that was not totally subservient to the US is definitely not trying to do the exact same thing again with THIS humanitarian aid shipment

80s bernie is the reason his venezuela position is so lovely. at least with sesta fosta i can see it being a result of him just being an old dumbass, like his crime bill vote and earlier centrist anti-drug stances. and maybe he can be pressured on this too and i hope he can, but theres no way he can claim ignorance or naivete here and i have to wonder wtf he is thinking

guessing that this is an attempt to win over Florida voters or at least not get gusanos to turn out en masse against him

To his credit, he's been asked about Venezuela a lot in recent interviews and each time has said that we should not gently caress around there like we have with Chile, Nicaragua, Guatemala, etc. and that Venezuela's government should be decided by Venezuelans alone. That's a good answer.

But he really needs to make it clear that while - all things being equal - humanitarian aid from the US is good, in this case with Elliott Abrams in charge it is guaranteed groundwork for regime change and arming right wing death squads. He isn't writing his own tweets but he is responsible for making sure whoever does is consistent with his positions. And this is one where nuance makes the difference between him unwittingly repeating pro-regime-change propaganda and pissing off his base royally or being one of two strong anti-imperialist voices in Congress. Generally he's still good on this front, but on this he needs to be better.

Humanitarian aid from the US isn't good. It cannot be good. The economic value of the aid is insignificant compared to the sanctions/embargo/seizures. End them, then we can talk about aid.

Unfortunately, the situation is far too complicated for the average voter. We don't have democracy. We can't have democracy. There is no hope.

The reason stuff like this is disappointing is because you can point to any other major issue facing America and find clips of Sanders being consistently on the right side for 40 years. But he isn't as unapologetic about anti-imperialism as he used to be so stuff like this stands out even more. Still stronger than anyone else running for president by a long shot but unless he gets out in front of this with a better position he's just going to lose supporters on the left.

This. Given his well-documented past statements on the subject I'm willing cut him some slack on all this provided and contingent on it being a one-time mistake, and that he makes it goddamn clear that there is no point even symbolically supporting aid shipments so long as a blood-gargling psychopath like Abrams is involved.

I mean, he gave an interview literally 4 days ago where he said Maduro has been abusive but the decision to oust him should be left to the Venezuelan people alone through a free and fair election. And he said US must not use military force and intervene like we have in Chile, Brazil, Guatemala, etc. and that we have a terrible history of meddling in Latin America.

So, best case scenario is the person who runs his Twitter did him a huge disservice with this vague tweet. Worst case is he's already caving to pressure caused by the media honing in on Venezuela as a socialist boogeyman. I'm betting on the former but am still disappointed nonetheless and he needs to clarify this sooner rather than later. Venezuela is accepting aid from countries not committed to overthrowing it so talking about US aid in this case is pointless anyway and will only hurt him. I have to think he knows this playbook given his support of the Sandinistas so for now I can give him the benefit of the doubt.

yea this is my bet too, he's trying to tread the line of being clear he doesn't like Maduro but doesn't want coups which leaves him saying vague things supporting aid bc opposing humanitarian aid will cause him to get wrecked in fl

calling Abrams out specifically would be p cool or just saying he supports aid so long as it's flowing through the south american countries attempting to assist instead of our CIA backed resources

taking a step back poo poo like this and the Ilhan saga are why politicians are so bad on interventionism. the US has so successfully associated humanitarian aid with coups that you'd be justified in opposing humanitarian aid but to regular people you seem like a loving monster if you do that

This is why the only winning move is not to play - i.e., don't mention "humanitarian aid" at all or if you must then put the Red Cross or non-American countries in the forefront instead of American aid. In terms of threading the needle for a wide audience it is impossible unless you elaborate on how aid has been used as a smokescreen. That is absolutely the best and only way to respond to this because the guy in charge now literally did exactly that and then lied to Congress about it.
