Like I get it, this is the whole point of this genre that I've not-so-coincidentally ignored over the years. But playing this and Dead Cells alongside each other, I think I'm more firmly in the Rogue-lite camp because I like gaining advantages, slowly but surely (and Dead Cells controls a lot better IMO).

As far as Spelunky is concerned, you unlock shortcuts to each floor and that’s about it. The game is what it is, so if you don’t like it by now then nothing that happens further in will change your mind.

I will say that in Spelunky, you do gain advantages over time, it’s just that those advantages are the skill you gain and tricks you learn while playing. The slow-but-sure improvement occurs not because the game changes, but because you do. Of course, there’s no point to doing that if it’s not fun.

Dirt Rally 2.0 is available now for Deluxe preorders. It is loving brutal. There is no difficulty adjustments. The game is set to what would be considered full realism and very hard AI.

i feel like Enter the Gungeon is a good roguelike in which you unlock items as while you can beat the game with default weapons the new ones create different ways on how you play the game. The NPCs you free just make the game more convenient in following runs and expand your options.

Enter the Gungeon has items that literally carry over between runs which is a ridiculous sin from a roguelike perspective.

Also I don't know for sure but I'm pretty sure its like BoI where the stuff you unlock is objectively more powerful and also the default game doesn't have all of the content in it from the start.

Enter the Gungeon is cool but it has the thing that bugged me in Isaac where the developers have decided that having a really lucky run is bad also you aren't allowed to kill a boss too quickly.

I'm astonished it isn't important for any endings though, and now have absolutely no idea how to get the true ending. Not looking for hints yet though

You are allowed to melt the bosses in seconds, you just need to get the right items.

Well if you meant "there is at least one ending that doesn't require it" I already knew that cause I posted about getting an ending a page or two ago. I'm specifically on the hunt for endings that make a modicum of sense, now (which might be a hopeless endeavor)

It goes even further than that, the "advantages" you unlock are not advantages but training wheels to help you get familiarized with later areas, but they actually not only make you weaker (since you can't accrue powerups from earlier floors if you use the shortcuts), they also cut you off from secret levels since using a shortcut means you'll skip the first item you need to unlock them. In dead cells the game's been designed so you need permanent advantages, while in Spelunky it's designed so the advantages are just a short term thing you'll eventually want to drop.

Enter the Gungeon is boring. Like imagine if there was just this constant "plink plink plink" sound that you like can hear but can't do anything about. Enter the Gungeon is like, if that feeling was given video game form. It just feels, moves, and plays like "plink plink plink."

There are driving assists in the options menu, and you can change AI difficulty in freeplay modes. In career I think it goes up as you win championships, same way they did it in DR1. It does absolutely default to all assists off though.

end of the 4.5 tatami age

the spelunky whip has a bit of a timing thing but with enough practice you can consistently whip arrows out of the air as you fall past traps which feels insanely cool

anyway the way to make things easier is to make it a lot lot harder by killing shopkeepers and getting the King of weapons, the shotgun and also maybe a jetpack. once you start robbing stores and get climbing gloves and jet packs and bombs things open way up

there’s a consistent way to rob the initial shopkeeper that i can detail later
