I am reading way too much into this but there was one bit early on in the story that got me thinking, they mentioned that the internet TVs that are also cameras can see through flesh to what he was trying to hide behind his back or whatever, presumably it can also see through most material then? My point is i took from that big brother KNOWS about all the illegal poo poo he is doing, they saw him bring all the illegal bootlegs and books into his house, and there is no way a government that put cameras in your house isnt also logging his data usage (where he also did illegal things).

So they know that he is a criminal doing IP theft (which was stated to be the worst crime in this setting, to the point that even murder is easier to get away with) and various other things but arent bothering to arrest him, presumably because they dont see him as a threat of any kind. This is probably not actually what rall was going for but its a neat thing i noticed that could easily go somewhere.

I like Steven Universe because I think Fusion as a metaphor for relationships is a great way to discuss both the dangers of toxic and abusive relationships, and the problems with codependency in "good" relationships, but I think the coding is too strong to actually be useful to the target audience. I also like the realistic depiction of trauma, but again with the same criticism.

But getting an avatar of a cartoon character that displays your love of a childish, nerdy, niche product? God, how garish.

Avatar choice is an inherently personal choice though (unless you've been redtexted). You get 150x150 pixels to represent yourself to the rest of the forums, and there's a reason why you choose what you choose--whatever you choose ends up being something that echos or resonates with you so much that you believe it's the best way to represent yourself.

Hard to believe given what happened with the adult male fanbase, I know, but MLP wasn't awful. MLP was just a cute show for preteen girls that was supposed to sell toys and encourage, well, friendship. Taken on its own, MLP is fine, though not particularly interesting for adults (though, not gonna lie, there are some fun references that kids weren't likely to get--the pilot ends with a shot-for-shot recreation of the ending of A New Hope, for instance).

Steven Universe also isn't awful, but as with, well, any media, there's a small (way, way smaller than MLP) part of the fanbase that's obnoxious and terrible. Thankfully it's usually drowned out by the rest of the audience, who celebrate the show for its pro-acceptance messages, heavily serialized plotting, and catchy songs.

I still watch MLP, and it's fun, but I acknowledge that I'm not the target audience. I missed the whole "toxic brony fandom" thing, so I'm not sure what it was about, but it sounds like a lot of lovely entitled manbabies. There's really nothing in the show that should encourage that behavior. At one point, they even indirectly call it out by having Patton Oswalt play an obsessed fan of an Indiana Jones expy who tries to argue that one of the main characters is a bad fan for not liking it the same way as he does.

I hate this one because it wasn't even a mistake. She was talking about the three parts of government that are involved in legislating- the House, the Senate, and the White House. It's the same way people say a state has a "trifecta" if its two legislative assemblies and its governor are all held by the same party.

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/paulmcleod/advocates-unwilling-to-work-basic-income-ocasio-cortez

quote:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez couldn't distance herself fast enough last week from a promise on her website that the Green New Deal would take care of people who are "unwilling to work." First her team falsely claimed it was doctored by the GOP, then said it was part of a draft version that was mistakenly released.

But advocates for the ambitious program, known as universal basic income (UBI), say paying everyone isn't a typo or a bug — it's the whole point. Their vision of a country that takes care of everyone’s basic needs is gaining traction from socialist gatherings in Brooklyn to the Silicon Valley tech futurist set.

But with three simple words, Ocasio-Cortez exposed just how difficult the idea will be to sell to the public.

Critics turned “unwilling to work” into the plan’s unofficial and unwanted tagline. It was repeated ad nauseum in conservative media circles. The trolly site unwillingtowork.org encourages you to join the unwilling and be handed a new high-paying job, or “paid passions” as the page announces they will now be called.

The reaction was not a surprise to universal basic income advocates, who say Republicans have always fought wealth redistribution programs. But they saw a chance for Democrats to double down.

“This idea that somehow people who are unwilling to work are bad or lazy is a horrible idea. Because whenever there’s a job offer and somebody doesn’t want it, what you have is a dispute about wages and working conditions,” said Karl Widerquist, a professor at Georgetown University in Qatar. “We need to change the discussion, reframe it, go on offense.”

Instead of trying to flip the switch from lazy workers to cheap employers, Democrats ran for the hills. The drafters of the Green New Deal dismissed the wording as an editing error in an early draft. Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff said it was not in regard to universal basic income but pensions for coal miners. Even defenders of the Green New Deal’s other hugely ambitious proposals dismissed universal basic income.

“I think it’s a nonstarter. It’s not just a political barrier, it’s substantively dumb to pay people who are unwilling to work. It’s offensive to most Americans who are working really hard,” said Rep. Ro Khanna, an ardent supporter of the Green New Deal.

For proponents, it’s a frustrating blow. Andrew Yang, an entrepreneur and long shot presidential candidate from New York who is running on a universal basic income platform, said the policy got caught up in the partisan media swirl that surrounds Ocasio-Cortez. He said the language was not only damaging, but it was an inaccurate portrayal of the policy — giving every American a subsidy (proposals usually sit around $1,000 per person per month) to help cover basic needs.

For the record, this is why whenever you look at a camera for a picture, tilt your face a little bit downward. This almost always puts you in a better light from the camera's perspective and will immediately make your jawline less pronounced, soften your expression, and put you in a better, more humble looking angle. I can guarantee Michelle Bachman there would have looked loads better if her chin wasn't at such a horizontal angle.
