Yes, it's just a very silly possible cap to the developing shift. Didn't mean to imply that the American Hegemon was in full health and power until Donny flipped the off switch. Rather that it's endured through decades of work, retarding it's decay, which he's just making GBS threads all over because he doesn't understand anything but "Deals". Can we reach full fall of the empire before the orange stains are finally cleaned from the White House tub?

I was being a performative jackass there for the sake of making a point and for the record I do agree that Trump's actions in the presidency will have long term consequences. Still, it really can't be emphasized enough that most of the decline of American (or European for that matter) power is a reversion to the long term historical norm. It was only relatively recently that the Atlantic basin became the centre of geopolitics and the world economy, and as the gains from the industrial revolution continue to disperse throughout the world it's quite predictable that the disproportionate power and influence of the countries that industrialized first would somewhat diminish.

Most of the trends we're seeing today go back to the mid-20th century or earlier. I think it's often hard for Americans to see this because 1) they're not taught to recognize that their country was the natural successor to European imperialism and 2) they tend to think history started in 1945 and assume every event in world history is directly a result of either a good or bad thing that America did.

It is good to occasionally remind yourself that most of the major trends in world history are beyond the power of any President, good or bad, to control.

Well, with regards to Rome a lot of the stories about the various mad Emperors have been discarded as probable contemporary propaganda (e.g. Caligula with the Horse Senator and such). Recent political events in the US and UK leads me to kind of believe that those stories might as well be true. If David Cameron could gently caress a dead pig, then by all means Caligula could very well have made his horse a senator.

It's not hard to see how a combination of rumours mixed with Trump's very real actions could end up in his being seen retrospectively as this era's Caligula. I mean, he rawdogged a pornstar while his wife was pregnant, boasted about groping women, appointed a rapist to the Supreme Court, threw a bunch of kids into concentration camps (and seems to draw real pleasure from bringing about the deaths of kids who are the wrong colour), insulted all of the country's allies, and went golfing immediately after declaring a national emergency. That's not even accounting for the flagrant nepotism and corruption.

Mix in the pisstape, various unsavoury rumours about him and Ivanka, some of the stories about the creepy pedo-parties he allegedly attended in the 80s, and it really isn't hard to imagine him getting the full Caligula treatment.

Why would Trump be universally reviled, 50 or 100 years from now? There’ll still be the same people explaining that "you can’t judge a person from decades ago using today’s moral criteria, sexism was deeply ingrained in their culture and everyone did it".

Trump's "sexism" isn't considered acceptable even now, though. While some portion of his supporter's are behind it (note the skew in those supporters towards old white guys), a majority of the US disapproves of his rapey comments, of Kavanaugh, and of a wide range of the things I just described.

As for universal revulsion, here are a few possible reasons: Trump's base skews old, so the fraction of Fox-consuming, rally-attending Trumpstaffel will be much, much less even 20-30 years from now by sheer attrition. Even now, that fraction (people who hardline support him) in the US is only about a third of the country, with the other 10% or so that he needed to win his 2016 minority victory being the kind of people who knew he was vile but held their noses and voted for him anyway. Outside the USA, he's widely regarded as a dangerous clown at best. Diplomats and world leaders literally laugh in his face and treat him like a five-year-old.

But talking 50 to 100 years from now, when the effects of climate change will be immediate and the people born in those times immensely resentful of the politicians of our era, it isn't very hard to see him becoming a lightning rod for that anger.

It's not by any means guaranteed, but I find it at least in the plausible to likely range that he'll be looked back upon as America's Caligula.

Edit: lol E;FB on the global warming denial.

The most interesting aspect to me is how quickly the media was willing to make a narrative out of Obama's and Hillary's undergrad academics, but Trump's grades never even came up till now.

Just another data point showing the different standards. If Obama had done literally *any* of the things Trump did, he'd have been impeached.

She bounced around a lot (Post, CNN, Politico) and came on at the NYT six months before Trump declared his candidacy. Though it's still a case where her hire was widely seen as a stab at getting good Access Journalism (with the Clinton campaign).
