im not sure about this whole 'south indians dont identify with india aa s a nation state or indian nationalism' thesis. the BJP might not be super popular in parts of the south but that doesnt preclude hindu nationalist ideas from having an audience. people are religiously fanatical there and the religion and the national identity are inextricably linked at this point. i mean i think a huge part of the narrative around hinduism in the modern era comes from being suppressed first by muslim rulers then by christian and that's a shared experience between northerners and southerners. intense ethnolinguistic divides are common at the local level obviously though and theres always breakaway movements within states. thats not to say there isnt a north/south divide and accompanying resentment but its not at the same level of intensity that islamophobia is right now

I remember reading about Indian nationalism and whoever wrote it basically said there's 3 provinces if given a real referendum would choose to secede from India so I buy that not all parts of India even the Hindu parts are equally nationalistic

Tamil Nadu for example might not have Punjab's secessionist history but tamilians identify as Tamil way more than they do as indian (this is pretty true for most regions but really intense there). There's a reason none of the national parties have any seats in their legislative assembly despite their main regionalist party (the dmk) splitting into two Fun fact, the leader of the opposition in Tamil Nadu is a guy called stalin E: my bad, apparently the Congress has like 5% of the seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly.
