The Minecraft source code was such garbage that Microsoft had to totally refactor it when the bought the IP from him. He's very much a random guy who happened to get really, really lucky with his 'learn Java' project. So a pretty appropriate 21st century Howard Hughes going insane in his mansion I guess.
