There's a popular conspiracy theory that everyone in power knew what Savile was up to, but couldn't risk doing anything to stop him because he was the fixer (pun intended) who enabled other high-profile paedophiles access to kids. Any accusations against him while he was still alive could have seen him dishing the dirt on everyone he was connected to.

So why didn't any of this come out until immediately after he died? Was he that powerful/influential that he'd destroy anyone who outed him? The reality of Jimmy Savile is bad enough. The idea that people waited for this 84 year old to die of natural causes before finally speaking out is even worse. Granted, Americans almost did the same thing with Cosby.

IIRC, Savile was also questioned on suspicion of being the Yorkshire Ripper, as one of the victims was murdered in sightline of his flat. Mind you, so were half of Joy Division. At least New Order didn't strike up a friendship with the actual Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, whilst he was in Broadmoor.

When the Jimmy Saville story broke my flatmate told me a story. Quoting for memory here: "When my brother studied to become a journalist, they had a class on ethics. One of the things they stressed in that class was what to do if you as a journalist stumbled across a story that couldn't be exposed for whatever reason. An example give was this: Let's say you learn that a major philanthropist is a serial child rapist. You have the proof, this person has literally hosed children up every orifice for years. He has also donated incredible amounts of money to medical charity. Let's say he alone funds Britain's best hospital for children with spinal injuries. Do you expose him? If you do, that hospital will probably shut down, because who will step up and donate £1 million every year? Are you willing to sacrifice every child with a spinal injury?" My flatmate's brother graduated in 1996. So if this story is true (I believe it was) it was obviously a well-known secret for decades. Big enough it may have been used as an example of what to shut up about.
