They already have a verification that does exactly this, and it results in the incel/pedo/nazi stuff because that's the system working as intended. This is the content Youtube *willingly* cultivates, it's not an accident.

Their verification seems more geared towards making sure people can't rip-off popular accounts, what I'm saying is they need to raise their standards exponentially for the sort of verification that makes your videos start showing up in ANY way for someone who isn't explicitly searching for them, and also not just base it on how many views you're getting. They should feel responsible for the meta-communities that emerge out of that sort of thing and they don't at all.

If I was running things I'd say: hey if Jordan Peterson and the dickless wonders want to organize elsewhere and promote their videos all over some other social media outlet and their blogs and get a billion people to watch some 2 hour long video about Genghis Khan being the original Luke Skywalker then they can feel free, but we shouldn't feel responsible in the least for promoting it to anyone who's not searching for (or clicking a link to) exactly that video. Not people searching Genghis Khan, not people searching Luke Skywalker, maybe people searching both at the same time, but definitely not someone who just watched a Star Wars trailer and didn't even ask for it.

I hate the poo poo out of the youtube algorithm and think Google is insanely irresponsible to be running it the way they do and giving people money to perpetuate it with any sort of garbage they can dream of that can get someone to watch a video.

They do feel responsible for those communities, however they also feel that those communities are a net positive. They're a massive corporation and will always have corporate interests that align with "business friendly" think tanks and ideologies like nazism. There's no way to moderate yourself out of this mess, the bare minimum it'd take to fix Youtube is running magnets across their server banks.

It's just dumb as hell because it's example number 1000 of something we'd never let anyone else get away with but they're a tech giant who can blame it on "the algorithm!" and if they ever actually get in serious trouble (re: like twice a week now) they just say "oh yeah that's awful, we'll take care of that and fiddle with the knobs so maybe it doesn't happen again, idk it's all just math!"

The first Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) was an blonde guy. But by the early 80s at least she was a black woman with big hair.

I know this "controversy" is like a thousand years old in internet time, but after watching a few eps of the new She-Ra, it's become even more apparent how much more idiotic the whole ordeal was (and it was already astronomically idiotic to begin with). The original complaint that the design for She-Ra was some evil SJW plan to try to make her uglier cause of political correctness or trans acceptance or whatever the gently caress, had absolutely no merit whatsoever given that in the show, She-Ra is a towering, fully developed Amazonian figure. The complaints were even more baffling given that even when Adora is in her regular human form, she has a very mature, developed body with curves and such (though this itself is a questionable thing given that she's supposed to be like 13) . Nobody watching the show would be questioning whether this is a cis-gendered female girl.

I haven't heard the usual suspects bitching about this issue since it came out (probably for the reasons stated above), but it just once again reminded me how stupid our culture wars currently are.

i agree with most of the article anyone who thinks that antifa is supposed to move forward revolutionary challenges to capitalism deeply misunderstoods the purpose of antifa, especially those who think public demonstration is the way forward

but i disagree with the conclusion that it is even appropriate for antifa to try to build a broader revolutionary movement just because it's been the only routinely successful popular left movement in the usa in decades however goofy black bloc looks in public in 2019

but i do enjoy the implied license to call anyone on the left who opposes antifa a filthy trot

A lot of it is this. Lots of these people were socially awkward nerds in the late 90s suburbs who couldn't get a girlfriend and didn't have access to porn because the internet either didn't exist or was 28.8k at best. One of the Scooby Doo girls in a bikini or a page torn from someone else's Playboy was what they had to work with.

The problem, as you say, is that they never developed beyond this for whatever reason, probably because they spent all their time in the company of other equally pathetic people who thought the same way so they were never exposed to people telling them they were weird and gross.

Yeah, the alt-right’s pop culture is pretty much built on old comic books and 80s cartoons/movies (and getting mad when those things make changes to appeal to a generation who are essentially too young to form political opinions, which is what the originals were made for anyway), and making bad internet memes, at least from what I see online.

A sad existence, yes, but an existence nonetheless.

yeah my question initially was “at what point in life” and after thinking about it the answer to his question is “yes for any point past 15 years old” since my grandparents were born about a decade after the Great Depression which hit their families a little hard.

Also telling that he’s the youngest person in the room by I’d guess at least 2 decades when he talks about the responses he gets from the young people.
